Yep, we walked the whole thing. They were actually working on the section by the rail yards when we got there.

I moved away from NYC when I was ten, but it will always be my favorite city on the planet. I'm hoping to go visit this fall.

I made this cake for Father's Day:

It's a Dobos Torte. It's topped with melted sugar that hardens to make a "drum" cover. It was delicious...

It was my coworker's birthday last week, and he got drunk to a point where he started challenging everyone to arm-wrestling matches.

Well...the cake, frosting, and topping contains six eggs, two cups of cream, 4 cups of sugar, a pound of chocolate, and almost a pound of butter....so yeah.

My grandmother passed away Saturday. I didn't really know her well, but it's hard watching my dad go through this. Anyway, from what I knew of her she hid a strong will, fierce morality, and wicked sense of humor behind her gentle southern drawl.

Here she is with my grandfather on their 50th wedding anniversary -- the sign behind them is perfect:

And because my crazy family never fails to find the humor in any situation, here one of my uncles, grandfather and some cousins having drinks in her honor:

And two of my youngest cousins, because kids remind us that there's always something to smile about -- especially memories of their Maw Maw:

tsq, your grandfather looks like he could be my grandfather. Or perhaps father, given the ages involved. He looks very similar to the men in my father's family,

So, my dad is originally from Lebanon. He came to the states in the sixties and went to college here, where he met my mom. The rest is history.

Since then, however, due to many issues - politics, war, finances, and what not, my dad's only been able to go back to his hometown a handful of times since then.

This year for Father's Day, my mom had the brilliant idea to bring a little bit of his hometown here. So, yesterday my brother and my brother-in-law did a ton of digging in the backyard at my parents' house and planted a cedar tree there for my dad. For those that don't know, the cedar is the national tree of Lebanon and is proudly emblazoned on that country's flag. It's probably also worth mentioning that the "Cedars of Lebanon" are mentioned a bunch of times in the bible too. The point is - we're proud of our flippin' trees.

Anywho. Dad loved it. My brother-in-law then sent me a photo after Dad came home and found his surprise waiting for him:

Love the family pics, 005 and tsq.

I went down to the Monterey/Carmel-by-the-Sea area to spend the weekend with two good friends for my birthday. It was a really fun weekend but the views were amazing. Here are two of my favorite pics from the trip:

He makes the kibble come to him.

He wants you to get your own damn ball.

He refuses to clean himself in public.

He once lived as a cat for a month, just to see what it felt like.

He is...THE MOST INTERESTING DOG IN THE WORLD.
