Lets all vote so TWOK gets a spot on the list (obviously it wont be #1 or even top 100 even but itd be cool to have it appear somewhere...i remember Empire did a greatest ever list a few years back and being disappointed TWOK wasn't there)
    http://www.empireonline.com/301/vote/Default.asp?

the JJTreks will no doubt make the list as they are popular/modern/kewl etc so itd be ridiculous if there was no WOK in there somewhere

Nah. I don't think it's one of the top 300 movies ever.

Oh? I find it to be almost perfect in accomplishing its goals; I'm curious as to what criterion you're using to arrive at that conclusion.

That there at easily 301 movies which are better than it in the history of movies, like Sullivan's Travels, The General (Buster Keaton), Touch of Evil, Star Wars (the first), Night of the Hunter, Bob Le Fambeur, Wild Strawberries, Ikiru, Network, Dr. Strangelove, On the Waterfront, Blade Runner, In the Heat of the Night, Bicycle Thieves (aka The Bicycle Thief), Casablanca, The Great Dictator, The Crowd, Vertigo, 2001, Solaris (1972), M, The Godfather, Cinema Paradiso, The Big Sleep, Some Like It Hot, The Pornographers, etc. etc. etc. etc. :)

    YMMV.

I'm with Maurice on this one. Though TWOK is a damn good movie, there's a line of better movies in front of it. Since the voting was confined to a top 5, it would never make that list for me. I place TWOK in my top 20 films. Instead, I went with: Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca, Rear Window, Heat (1995), and The Departed.

TWOK is my favourite movie of all time.

Much better than say 'Star Wars the first' or 'Rear Windows' or 'Gone With the Wind' or 'Dr Strangelove'.

    I'll be voting for it.:)

    Count on my support...

I'm blown away that WILD STRAWBERRIES is among a fellow Trek fan's favorites.

    Mine, too. Amazing film.

Star Wars the first is a much more groundbreaking and entertaining film than TWOK. The former is a clever synthesis of the swashbuckler, samurai film, and western masquerading as scifi using documentary style camera technique. The latter is a TV movie melodrama which innovates nothing but the first narrative CGI graphic shot in feature films. It ain't bad, but it ain't great, either.

To put TWOK over Strangelove...madness. ;)

It's not that great. Not top 301 films EVER great.

Since the sound era the US alone has produced something like 50,000+ feature films. To place in the top 301 a film would have to be in the upper .6%. 301 films are better than the remaining 50,000. Now, add in foreign films and silents (80% of which are lost) and that 301 as a percentile of the total slides down to some microscopic fraction.

this 301 greatest list is really just most popular and the top 10 will be dominated by SW, LOTR, Potter, Superheroes (Marvel/TDK), maybe some SF classics (Alien, Terminator, Blade Runner) and maybe a Tarantino, Scorsese, Godfather, Scarface (as has been the case whenever Empire has done a greatest poll in the past)

so really people are just voting for their favorites, so if your favourite films are the Star Treks (as mine are) get voting! :D

Which of course means it's like a high school election where the popular kids win, and just about as meaningful. :)

Nah, a list by a newsstand magazine is totes serious business and should be treated as such, hence the pseud-like discussion taking place.

    Maybe, maybe not.

This is for when they did the Top 500

    http://www.empireonline.com/500/1.asp

The Top 10 then were :

    10.>Fight Club
    9.>Pulp Fiction
    8.>Signin' In The Rain
    7.>Apocalypse Now
    6.>Goodfellas
    5.>Jaws
    4.>Shawshank Redemption
3.>Star Wats Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
    2.>Raiders of the Lost Ark
    1.>The Godfather

I still think the cream will rise to the top. Sure I've enjoyed some of the superhero films etc.. But I would hardly say they would count in my Top 5 Greatest movies of all time.
