Well, I forked over fourteen bucks in advanced to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at the local IMAX yesterday. It was stupid, offensive, and I could have gone my whole life without seein' John Turtorro's bare ass on an IMAX screen. I've never before heard a theater full of people go "EEEWW!!!" at the same time. Of course, there will be another sequel, but I won't be wastin' my money on it. So, add it to my list. Gran Torino* Frost/Nixon Inkheart* Fanboys Friday the 13th (2009)* The International* Watchmen* Monsters vs Aliens* Fast and Furious* Star Trek (2009)* The Soloist* Battle for Terra* X-Men Origins: Wolverine Band from TV Concert Video Drag Me to Hell* Away We Go* Terminator: Salvation Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Each movie with a * means I saw it at a free advanced screenin'.
Wow, this might be a little tough... Waltz with Bashir - unusual and good. Oliver! (the musical from the 60s) - not as good as I remember. However, for a 2 1/2 hr movie, it sure zips along.
Seen for the first time: Star Trek Wolverine Valkyrie The Taking of Phelam 1-2-3 Iron Man Hulk Traitor TMNT Batman: The Dark Knight V for Vendetta Star Wars: The Clone Wars Mum & Dad Mr. Brooks Run Fatboy Run Fantastic Four 1 Fantastic Four 2 Quantam of Solace May as well add the below. More old movies I've recently seen: The Astronaut Farmer [C] Seven Samurai [A] The Number 23 [D] Watership Down The Prestige Bee Movie [C] I'm glad that I finally found three and a half hours to sit down and watch Seven Samurai in one sitting. George Lucas has stated that this film was partially the inspiration for Star Wars, and I can totally see that- the way that some of the action shots were constructed is almost exactly like how he handled those type of shots in the trilogy. I was surprised to see the trademark Star Wars "wipe" shot to cut from scene to scene was also taken from this movie!
I've only seen two movies in the theatre this year: Star Trek Watchmen On DVD, I've seen quite a few - probably close to 100 films. Most of them were classic (pre-1965) films however, so I won't bother typing them out as most people around here don't know and don't care about them. I'll just say that I watched alot of Paul Newman pictures this year (for obvious reasons), alot of Tyrone Power pictures (he had a huge boxed set of films come out this past year), alot of Truffaut films (got on a kick), alot of John Mills films (tons came out in the UK this past year as it was his centennial birthday), alot of Dirk Bogarde films (another kick), and several Sean Connery films (he was Star of the Month for May on TCM). "Modern" movies I've seen this year on DVD: Underworld Underworld: Evolution (looking at BigFoot's avatar every day for about 4 years FINALLY broke me down ) The Reader P.S. I Love You Onegin The White Countess Support Your Local Sheriff (could be classified as classic film though since it's 1968) There are probably a few others, but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.
Both worth goin' to the theater to check out. I'm goin' out tomorrow night to check out Star Trek again, and will be havin' a viewin' party for the director's cut of Watchmen when it comes out. LOVE THAT MOVIE! Oh, my god, one of the best James Garner movies, ever. I keep meanin' to watch the psuedo-sequel, Support Your Local Gunfighter, but I just haven't gotten to it.
Support Your Local Gunfighter is good too, but Support Your Local Sheriff is better, IMO. Although your mileage may vary. IMO, the best 'comedy' western ever made. Doesn't rely on juvenile 'guy humor' like Blazing Saddles. It's just good old fashion FUNNY. I love the part where he explains about the jail with no bars, and how 'we're just gonna operate as if there WERE bars, and everything will be fine." James Garner is, IMO, one of the best (and perhaps one of the most under-recognized) comic actors ever.
Gentleman's Agreement - A Very Important Film when released in '47 but a bit on the speechy side now...I kept looking for Dean Stockwell, and finally realized DUH! he'd be a little kid... Push - Eh, okay. Didn't deserve the trashing it got in the reviews when released. Or maybe Heroes makes it look more coherent by comparison?
I made the same mistake when I watched it a few years ago! Got plans to go see Moon this weekend, hope it doesn't suck!
Just seen "The Hangover" in the cinema: it is actually really funny. I'd recommend it if you want to zone out for a couple of hours, ha.
I've been hearing great things, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. I'm still trying to find time to get to the theater here that's showing it.
