We have some of the lowest taxes in the modern world and in our own country the lowest taxes ever. As you said, the taxes in the 1950s were vastly higher on the rich and somehow success, prosperity and society chugged along nicely. Hell, some of our greatest achievements as a country came during those times.

If their side spent even one-fifth the time complaining about the widening income gap and declining consumer purchasing power that they do about the poor and working class not qualifying to pay any federal income taxes and programs like Food Stamps they might actually change many things for the better, since they'd be onboard with much of the rest of the country in enacting some positive changes to our economy.

But they won't complain about a widening income gap and declining consumer purchasing power because that would mean having to pay people more, and that would almost certainly entail a higher minimum wage and even the enactment of living wage legislation in more and more cities and states. That goes against the American Dream of making record profits in a bad economy and earning hundreds of times what your average employee does.

When a company chairman can't buy a third Mercedes because they gave their employees a significant raise we all die a little on the inside.

Hey man, if a man can't buy a $3,000,000 cliff-side home in Malibu then freedom means nothing. That guy down there working 80 hours a week with two jobs struggling just to feed his family some Ramen for dinner? Fuck him, he should try harder.

How the hell are they supposed to give raises to anyone? Alimony on those ex-wives doesn't come cheap.

    Well it is your opinion.

Although mine is based on evidence and fact.

The American Dream doesn't apply to everyone anymore, just the privileged few. Which is exactly the way they want it.

One flaw in the plan that hasn't been addressed in anything I've read is the potential for tax evasion. It sounds designed to encourage black markets and bartering!

42% top marginal income tax on wealthy Republicans who stay with their first wives and don't cheat. 92% on those who don't and do.

The Treasury would look like a Scrooge McDuck wet dream.

    :guffaw::guffaw:

And there isn't tax evasion now?

That's like saying laws against murder make people try to get away with it.

Hell, sin taxes on cigarettes have created a black market on a legal product!

You've mentioned the Romney 47%/"half the country are freeloaders" cliché at least twice that I've seen in this thread.

    - First off, it's astonishing to me that anyone is still quoting a widely reviled comment from a failed candidate who even Republicans won't touch with a ten foot pole these days.
    - Secondly, it's a bullshit myth that has been thoroughly debunked by countless liberal, neutral, and even fiscal conservative sources since it came out last year, so it takes a very special brand of ignorance to continue quoting it like it's gospel.
    - Thirdly, believing and quoting it requires a profound misunderstanding of how taxes work in this country.
    - And finally, it's a myth that it's only Democrats benefiting from this, and thus it's progressives who are perpetuating these policies to support their constituents. These tax policies and cuts were implemented and expanded under noted socialists Ford, Reagan, GHW Bush, and GW Bush in addition to Democratic presidents. Many of the people who pay no federal income tax are elderly retired people who have already paid for decades and military personnel serving in combat, so go ahead and call them freeloaders. Also, they're both groups who vote Republican in high numbers.

So, pretty please with a cherry on top, shut up about half the country being freeloaders, because that's an insulting load of shit. Also, I'd bet many of those "freeloaders" have contributed a great deal more in taxes than you have.

Government has a job to do and that involves spending money. As it is now it can barely do that job. The majority of our current deficit is Bush's tax cuts and paying for two wars and their resulting occupations.

Not only that, a lot of "fair tax" proponents suggest that they can lower overall tax rates because, unlike income tax, this tax doesn't have to be enforced. How they reached that conclusion is beyond me. That isn't to say tax evasion isn't a thing now, just that it'll still be a thing regardless of the change and isn't a reason to change.

The Fair Taxers like to say it can't be enforced because "you can't force people to buy products at stores. They'll decide if they pay the national sales tax or not." They argue that you can't make a rich man buy an expensive sportscar and you can't force a poor or working-class man to buy a box of cereal of diapers, so that equalizes the playing field.

Although there's a lot to be said for the argument that poor and working-class people often need diapers and cereal and a rich person doesn't need a new sportscar, so there are some inherent - flaws - in the Fair Tax argument.

It's based on the incorrect assumption that people will do the right thing on their own. Like how we should drop all regulations because companies can police themselves. I don't know if they're naive or stupid.

The law is being perceived as something to punish and control people with. The law isn't something good which serves as protection from harm, but as a cudgel to force obedience to those in power. It's a sad view of the law, but it is helping push an ideology that favors deregulation. The end result will not benefit the teaparty and Libertarians as much as they hope. A true case of being careful what you wish for.

As a wise, aging man who once saw the disaster of widening corruption firsthand once said: "Who's more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows him?"

Somehow I think he would be arguing for the rich to pay their fair share to keep money moving.
