I toyed with the thought of running a new alt but only got as far as running the tutorial before i decided to just rename my VA and just rerun all the story missions I finished with him as well as the mission I still haven't run with him.

I did up the difficulty to advanced and equiped all my standard away team members with purple VA gear though.

Yep. last time I killed that thing was during open beta, when all you had to do was to spam its spawnpoint with mines and watch it die withing seconds after spawning.
    Good times.

Now, you should not go in there without a group of people who know what they're doing.
Which is exactly what you will not find in pugs when the event is active.

I have never been a party to a successful completion of that Crystalline Entity mission. It's too much of a frustrating pain in the arse when you do have a competent group.

Huh. That looks just like my old Gallifrey-B. :)
Have you tried shutting off the astrometric grid? Sector space looks sooo much better without it. :)

the ones i'm using currently don't seem to be stacking up against the romulans in the missions... just got my ass kicked repeatedly on the 'sky demon' mission

    Fore

    1. retrofit forward phaser bank mk IV
    2. Hargh'peng Torpedo launcher mark IV
    3. Plasma beam array mk IV

Shields - Resiliant Shield Array Mk V

    Aft Weapons

    1. Photon Torpedo Launcher mk IV
    2. Phaser Beam Array Mk IV
    3. Phaser Turrent Mk IV

You think thats a good layout or does it need changing somehow?

at the very least, lose the turret in favor of another beam array. Helps with broadsides (how you need to approach fighting in a cruiser, as they can't turn for shit). Turrets are only good for escorts, gets a little more DPS into the frontal attack.

If you want a little more punch up front, could move one of the beam arrays to the back and get a dual beam bank for the front. Firing arc isn't as good, but better damage. There's also a penalty for using different weapon types, so since you've got a couple phasers already, might be better to get rid of the plasma beam in favor of one more phaser array.

Other than that, you level so fast that it's not worth wasting much in energy credits on better gear. You'll find enough to keep going, or can get cheap stuff on the exchange to get along until the next level.

No kidding! I don't know what they've done, but I leveled my alt Lt. 6 up to Lt. Commander 11 inside of 2 hours. I'm almost Lt. Commander 16 now. If I play a few more hours, I'll hit Commander. That's just way too fast. I shouldn't be able to jump an entire full rank inside of a couple of hours. When I first started playing, back when the game was released, it took hours and hours of grinding and missions to level up. In the time it used to take me to go from Lt. 1 to Lt. 10, I can be a Captain now.

A minor nitpick. There is no reason to use two device slots for the same kind of battery, since you can stack the m into one slot.
These days I run only 2 kind of batteries at any time.
I always carry the subspace phase thingy from one of the Devidian mission plus maybe scorpion fighters sometimes. You get a stack from the mission The Vault soon.

I have a new favorite tactic in my escort:
Pummel with Rapid fire cannons (Mix of Phaser, Phaser-Quad and Heavy-Duty Tetrion)
Hit with a high yield torpedoes

If the target is still standing as you fly past:
    Activate Dispersal Pattern Beta
    Deploy quantum mines
Hold Target in place with Tractor beam until mines activate and obliterate them

    :)

Why not swap out the Tetryons for another HD phaser cannon? Don't get the reasoning behind the rainbow, just hurts the power levels...

Actually i think the power levels are not affected by different weapon types for a long time. But yur typical tactical console is weaker if you have a generic beam or cannon console compared to a dedicated phaser or plasma console.

I have a noob question. Right now I am struggling with piloting the ship in combat as my left hand is busy mashing hotkeys for special attacks or buffs while my right hand is holding down the left and right mouse button to turn the ship in the direction I want. Its very cumbersome holding both mouse buttons and I was wondering if there's a better way?

That's my tactic too, except I don't use tractor beams. I just carefully time the release of my quantum mines.
