Seconded! What the hell is going on there? Is that a colouring error, or is it a previously unseen new hair style from the late 2380's? The issue looks pretty nice though. Nice artwork. I may have to pick it up..

The art is superb and the story looks promising.

Really pumped for this - hope it isn't another Assimilation2 disappointment!

Do we get to see any new ships or species?

No, there is too many other story elements happening for those to be seen.

I am really excited about the new universe crossing over into the classic 24th century.
This does make me think about the continuity of the novel range. If I understand correctly, the Countdown version of Picard and by virtue the 24th century era in general, is meant to be a different continuity from the novel range. Right?

Correct. Countdown's version of Data is incompatible with what we've seen in the novels.

I'm not sure "meant to be" is the right way of putting it, but the Countdown continuity and the novel continuity at least happen to be distinct from each other in certain ways, primarily where Data is concerned.

I really like this story-line so far. I cannot wait to see Sisko and the rest of the DS9 crew interact with the JJ crew

This is possibly my most favourite STOngoing issue since Mirrored. Lots of fun and homages!

The ending reminded me of the beginning of a certain DS9 episode, but kind of in reverse.

    Bring on DS9...

I only quickly glanced through it, i'll read it tonight. but wow, this is some of the best artwork IDW has put out yet for a star trek comic. Just amazing stuff.

Nah - like Brent Spiner, DeLancie thinks he's got too old to play his unaging TNG character now. And would you really want his Q recast?

[This is before we consider the other 24th century characters, and the combination of actor aging and possible unwillingness to reprise therein, building new versions of the sets, and so on.]

Normally, I'd be open to recasting any role. But when I think about it... Q is a really, really stupid idea for a character. He's just a rehash of the stock Trek godlike alien, particularly the Trelane model (which wasn't all that entertaining the first time around), and he can do anything by snapping his fingers, which is the laziest possible approach to writing an alien in science fiction. He's basically the same character as The Great Gazoo. The only reason Q works at all is because of DeLancie's sublimely snarky and charismatic performance. So if you take DeLancie away, all you've got is... The Great Gazoo.

Of course not! If you put it that way, I don't want ANYONE to be recast!
