I'd love to see what Tarsem Singh would do with a Star Wars movie. THE FALL was both gorgeous and heartbreaking.

I wonder if they'll consider Gore Verbinski, though (in light of the PotC franchise)?

Most of these cases aren't them bowing out of contention so much as it was interviewers asking them about it. And both Zack Snyder and J.J Abrams are currently tied to tent-pole franchise pictures which have yet to be released.

My choice would be Gore Verbinski, he knows his way around making a blockbuster and he certainly knows how to film swordfighting.

  8. Works for me I didn't want any of those to begin with.
I'm more on the Vaughan, Verbinski, style director bandwagon, someone who's talented but doesn't have a "style" of movie, I'm looking for competence, ability to handle both popcorn adventure and mythic seriousness, and willingness to match the tone of the OT.

But isn't Favreau in that bracket?

Good god, I do not want to see Gore Verbinski direct this thing.

Haven't we had enough "over bloated, doesn't know when to say no and enough is enough filmmaking with a sense of "with CGI, we can do anything" without actually considering a story first" filmmaking with this franchise?

Not Favreau, please. He did well with Iron Man but I just don't see his tone working with the Star Wars franchise.

I could get on the Brad Bird or Duncan Jones bandwagon. Though I think that the studio would balk at Duncan's relatively unproven track record in terms of box office returns.

I think Verbinski is capable making very good movies and I would put Mouse Trap, The Ring and the first Pirates movie in that bracket. But the second Pirates movie definitely falls into the category you describe (and was so bad it put me off seeing the third).

Perhaps The Lone Ranger will see him being capable of making a tighter and more enjoyable movie or maybe the fault has been with the scripts he's been handed.

Seconded. He is a very capable director and a gifted visual storyteller, though I think he's not talented enough to overcome a bad script (to be honest very few directors are).

Have any of them actually been approached officially? I thought most of this was just people asking them in interviews and stuff.

I wouldn't have thought so - the fact that they've come from the Oscar-winning writer of Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3, a big SW fan himself, is the best news I've heard re the franchise in a long time.

Now, this may or may not be entirely irrelevant but it looks like Paramount are chasing Chris McQuarrie, not Brad Bird, to helm the 5th Mission: Impossible movie. This may well be due to McQuarrie directing Cruise in the forthcoming Jack Reacher movie (and he and Cruise have already worked together in Valkyrie).

But might Bird's absence just be down to a SW commitment? Or does it at least make him more likely to be involved?

We may want to remember that Bird and Lindelof are still pegged for that '1952' thing (which has been confirmed to not be Star Wars). It could be that's what's taking Bird's time.
