Up until I hit about 17/18 I hated my middle name, really hated it, then I started to appreciate it, I love the way it makes my name flow, and given it's my dad's name it's a nice reminder of him to always carry around with me :)

It's Reginald by the way, you can laugh it's ok!

"Middle" is a good middle name.

I don't have a second name. I am deeply and bitterly envious of you all.

I think the middle name is a good place to use some first name from inside the family. My middle name is my father's first name, my brother's middle name is the name of one of my mom's brothers. I'd likely do something along those lines. Really, the middle name is something only brought up at parties or in cases where it's really needed to distinguish an identity from a like-named person.

I tend to agree, and that's kind of what my family does, at least with the male members anyway. My middle name is my paternal grandfather's first name (and my first name is my maternal grandfather's first name). My older brother's middle name is my dad's first name, and his son's middle name is his own first name.

:) Nah my dad was Reg, I kinda prefer Reginald, plus I forgot to add, what someone said up-thread is true, you're never in as much trouble as when you mum calls you by your full name

I want to have 12 boys, name them all Big, and use the apostles for their middle names.

I like that as well, and I think it's the only reason I'd want to do a middle name for any hypothetical children of my own. If I ever had a daughter I'd probably want her middle name to be Marie, after a woman who has basically been like my grandmother.

I like this too. My parents were waiting for a boy to come around to name him after my great-grandfather, but instead they got four girls, so the youngest of us got a middle name of "James."

Re: If you are in the process of deciding a middle name for your child

Indeed, I think it's a nice way to honor someone inside the family without directly naming a child after that person. Now, both my brother and I had names selected by our parents that there were no nick-names for. (My parents didn't want us to be named "Robert" but be called "Bob" or "Rob" or something along those lines, for example.) So both me and my brother have first names that have no common nick names. (Though if you really tried you could call us by the first syllables in our names and sort of make sense.)

My brother and his wife did the same thing with my niece, her first name is the same as my SiL's but her middle name is the first name of a family member on her side of the family. (My SiL goes by her middle name.)

I think middle names are somewhat necessary, however. As I do think it helps distinguish someone between someone with a similar name should that situation ever crop up in school or elsewhere in life. But other than that middle names have little purpose. My mother's middle name is literally just a letter.

Also, interestingly, my niece has the exact same name as my cousin's child and they both attend the same school (though my cousin once-removed is a couple of grades higher.) It's caused one or two messes in messages being delivered home by the administration re: parent-teacher conferences and other issues where the parent needs to be contacted. My sister in law even once got called by the school once told her daughter was sick and needed to be picked up. She drove to the school to do it only to find out it was the cousin that was sick and not her daughter.

Re: If you are in the process of deciding a middle name for your child

Went to a niece's 3d birthday party yesterday, her half-brother (around 26yo) decribed me to his girlfriend as "propita," his Uncle Y's wife--"Y" being Hubby's middle name. I spoke about my husband as X--"X" being Hubby's first name--and mentioned he gets called a lot of names in the family. Nephew said, "Yeah, when Y came from Mexico, he started with 20 names, now he's down to just 3, first, middle, and last."
