Any fans of the pre-fab four around here?

Here's one of my favourite Rutles songs, It's Looking Good, taken from their historic 20 minute performance at Che Stadium during the '64/'65 world tour (I prefer this version to the studio track from Ouch!) -

Dirk, Barry, Stig and Nasty in some tight trousers. If I had to sum up the appeal of The Rutles, I'd have to say it was the trousers..

What's your fave Rutles song? Anyone here been lucky enough to see them live? Anyone got any stories they'd like to share?

I'll leave you with a few more shots from the '64 world tour -

I love the Rutles! I'm not a big fan of that new stuff they did a few years ago, but the original movie and album are fantastic.

Love Cheese and Onions and Hold My Hand.... Damn, now I have to dig that stuff up and listen again.

Yeah, love The Rutles! We used to have the album when I was a kid. Got played all the time. My favourite song? Another Day. Innes is a bloody genius.

"I'd like to be a hairdresser. *pause* Or two. *pause* I'd like to be two hairderssers." - Barry Wom.

I love The Rutles. Eric Idle is an under appreciated musical comedy genius. It doesn't shock me at all that he hung out with the Stones a lot during the 70's.

I love Nasty's solo stuff that he did with Chastity from the '70's (The Ceramic Hitler Band, with Happy Easter (Lent is Over) in 1972.) Some of Nasty's solo stuff is alright though... my favourites were

    Impassion

    Dream No 233687534098765224579Q

    Stand on Me

    Beautiful, Beautiful Goy

Ahh yes.. The Ron & Chastity years. Looked on by many as the beginning of the end. Still some good songs though.

It seems that Goose-Step Mama was oddly prophetic in a way.

I'm partial to some of McQuickly's work with Punk Floyd, and I don't mind Wom's solo LP When You Find The Girl Of Your Dreams In The Arms Of Some Scotsmen From Hull he did prior to his becoming two hairdressers.

I love the Rutles! Unlike Kirby, I like Archaeology a lot. (Actually, I tend to listen to the two albums together, in a playlist that puts their work into a rough chronological trend.)

And if you like the Rutles, you should check out The Rutles Lunch, a fan-made LOVE parody.

In general, I'm a Neil Innes fan. I love the Bonzo Dogs (and any Rutles fan should check out their "Give Booze a Chance").

I wondered how far this thread could go on without a mention of tea -

    [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijFDkpNma-k&feature=related[/yt]

I guess it's simply an accepted fact now that Sgt. Rutter's Only Darts Club Band, Tragical History Tour, The Shite Album et all would simply not be the albums they came to be without the mindbending effects of tea and it's influence on the band's creative process.

Instead, they'd probably have been quite good.

I went to see the Ruttles a couple of years ago at the historic 100 Club in London. They were very good no Eric Idol these days ofcourse but Neil Innes was on top form support came from his solo set.

^Hey that must have been a great night out. There are a few pics of those gigs doing the rounds, not to mention the official Archaeology promo stuff - I should post some later on if I get the time.

In the meantime, I think this thread could use a little Get Up and Go -

    [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hguPHn5Jfa8[/yt]

"Working up a fever in a one-horse town
was a Jockey by the name of Joe
He didn't have a lot of you might call luck
but he had a lot of get up and go

    Get up and go
    Get up and go
Get up and go back home
    Get up and go
    Get up and go
Get up and go back home

Tall in the saddle in a one-horse town
Joey knew someday he'd hit the road
He traded with a dealer for a pick-up truck
And went looking for a medium load

    Get up and go
    Get up and go
Get up and go back home
    Get up and go
    Get up and go
Get up and go back home

Cruising down the highway doing sixty-five
in the middle of the double white line
His foot down on the gas and his head in the clouds
He didn't see the one-way sign

    Get up and go
    Get up and go
Get up and go back home
    Get up and go
    Get up and go
Get up and go back home"

Unfortunately this was the only version I could find on youtube, the only other one being this which has been spliced up with some Rutles parody band. If anyone has a link to the proper vid, please post here.

"Get Up And Go"! That's the song that got Neil Innes sued by ATV for plagiarism of the Lennon/McCartney songbook. All four Beatles were sent a copy of All You Need Is Cash, and Lennon's comment on "Get Up and Go" was that it was too close for comfort. Because of that, it was left off the soundtrack album, and ATV sued anyway. Neil Innes, who didn't have the time or money to fend off a plagiarism lawsuit, settled and, as a result the songs that were on the 1978 LP are now officially credited to Lennon/McCartney/Innes. The additional songs on the Rhino CD reissue are still solely Innes'.

They should team up with Spinal Tap for a reunion tour this summer.

Spinal Tap's early days weren't unlike the Rutles themselves. Check out the video to "Gimme Some Money (1965)" to see what I mean...

I've always like that song, it has an early Stones feel even with the Beatle-like look and performance. The younger "St Hubbin's" kind of looks like Brian Jones.

In early December, MVD is releasing the two Rutles films (All You Need Is Cash and Can't Buy Me Lunch) on Blu-Ray in Beatles Anthology-inspired packaging. (Source) Also included is the original Rutles segment from Rutland Weekend Television (later shown on Saturday Night Live).
