Don't know if it's been mentioned already but my favourite Janeway hairstyle was the one in Cathexis, shame it didn't last vey long!
She looked much more authoritative with the bun. When she cut it short, it was too soccer-mom. Her bun was like Riker's beard. What I liked best about the bun was that it was like a Master Systems Display made of hair. When the ship was doing fine, the bun was immaculate. When the ship had hull breaches, primary power loss and was venting plasma, the bun unraveled.
LOL I know someone who is just now watching VOY as their first Trek series (got into Trek via ST:XI) and he is almost done with season 3. He made this exact comment about her hair and the status of the ship which he thought was hilarious.
It's a pretty interesting style, the way it sweeps around the side. Tiniest bit of wind and it would be disasterfied unless there is something special about 24th century hair spray. But if there was something special about 24th century hair spray it would also have to include being still soft to the touch even while immovable because otherwise no one would want to touch Janeway's concrete hair and we can't have that.
I've never understood the fuss about Janeway's hair, but I'm the kind of guy who doesn't notice the change in a casual ladyfriend's hairstyle until a week or more after. What was the deal with Mulgrew's hair? Did they think it looked too thin against the lights or something?
It's a good thing they didn't take up Patrick Stewart's offer to send for his toupee, or he might have gone through a dozen wigs.
