I never read any Trek Comics, but saw that there will be four "countdown" comics that will be compiled into a trade paperback to be released in late April 2009. Since I didn't want to read any spoilers in the article on Trekmovie.com I am guessing that this book will contain stories that will have helpful background info to the movie... info that Trekkies wouldn't know about before reading this book.

Anywho, I am wondering if the normal Trek author/editors had anything to do with this book? When I looked at the Pre-Order page on Amazon, I couldn't connect any of the authors to the Trek world. That is of course with the exception of the writers of Trek XI- Orci and Kurtzman. So... I am guessing that the normal Trek lit gang didn't/won't have a hand in this endeavor.

I'm curious to see how this movie will affect Trek lit world after May 2009.

How much does David Messina have to draw to be conntected to the Trek world? And what makes Andy Schmidt an abnormal editor?

^ For that matter, what makes any of the Trek authors or editors normal?

Is someone implying that I'm normal? I take exception to that!

As long as it's better than DC's Countdown series...

By the way, have folks noticed how the Countdown promo image parallels the movie teaser poster? In terms of position, color, and pose, younger Nero matches scarred/tattooed Nero, Nimoy Spock matches Quinto Spock, Picard matches Kirk, Data matches Uhura.

Someone at trekmovie did express unusual feelings about Data copying Uhura's provocative pose...

It's meant to be a prequel to the events of the new film and will utilize characters from the 24th Century.

I wonder if this is a post-Nemesis story, considering that Data is there. It'd be tough to reconcile B-4 into a Data role while still having this be a Star Trek XI tie-in.

Then again, if this is a pre-Nemesis, then not only is it easy to include Data here, but there's a chance that Abrams can wipe Nemesis off the face of the Earth! WOOO!

I just checked the first story announcing the series on Trekmovie.com and it says
If anything this only seems to make things more confusing in regards to Data. I'm really hoping they don't go the B-4 route because as the authors have pointed out many times that just doesn't really work very well. I'm also hoping this doesn't contradict the books, because I really like being able to think that they are the official continuation of the series. Now don't think I'm gonna immediately stop liking them if they are contradicted, because no matter what I still love the books.

^^Well, despite the authorship of Countdown, it's still a comic book and thus not strictly canonical. So if it contradicts the books, that's no more disastrous than, say, the Shatnerverse contradicting the other novels. It's just an alternate interpretation.

As has been mentioned, "primarily set in the time before Nero goes back in time, specifically the Next Generation era after Star Trek Nemesis," doesn't mean exclusively set in that time. It remains possible that at least this first book with Data on the cover takes place before NEM.

    Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

52 issues of Countdown to Final Crisis. Not too much work to improve upon all of those issues.

I don't think Data is appearing post-Nemesis, and I don't think that makes it inconsistent with saying that the comics are set 'post Nemesis'. Small movie spoiler in the tags along with my explanation for why I think why not...

We know that Nero escapes from Rura Penthe before going back in time, something that's been hinted at by the producers and there are some compelling screencaps for from the trailer.

This means that has to be a place where he spent some time, perhaps a prolonged period of time. Nothing says that time served wasn't over the course of the events of Nemesis, and Countdown will cover a longer period of time (so Data would appear in a pre-Nemesis Nero story before his incarceration followed up a later issue which is set after Nemesis and involves Nero's escape and subsequent time travel)

Maybe the first 2 issues are set pre-Nemesis, and the last two are set after Nemesis. That makes the blurb consistent, and the appearance of Data. Nothing says that they have to be one long directly continuous storylines, rather than 4 'episodes' that cover Nero's backstory.
