Why was Kes written off the show?

 me too. Poor Joe. Wasn't he in engineering with B'Elanna? I think Ensign Jetal (?) was more memorable and she was only in one episode.

    From Latent image?

Ahni died between worst case scenario and scorpion according to Memory Alpha.

It took the Doctor a year and a half to notice that she was dead.

But honestly, this is like in the case of Lyndsay Ballard in Ashes to Ashes.

They didn't, or couldn't be bothered using an actress/character from an earlier season, and instead had to invent and retroactively insert actresses into voyagers not so rich continuity.

That pretty much defines this thread. No wonder it will never end.

What are these brick walls you keep talking about? As others have shown in looking through the actual episodes, there is no evidence that Kes' role was diminishing in season 3 versus season 2. The "brick wall" thing is only a result of being TOLD that as an after the fact excuse for dumping her. There is no on-screen evidence that Kes was being abandoned as a character before "scorpion, part II."

And I didn't mean a recurring role, I meant roles like those later-season rotating TNG helm ensigns who got three or four lines of generic dialogue per episode. Does it really cost more to do that than to pay a regular salary to a main cast member?

If anything, "Before and After" showed us only a snippet of the potential of the Kes character, I really don't see the writers struggling with her in season 3. Sure they changed her hair/clothes but that was a move well overdue, hardly a "desperate attempt to make the character work".

Well, depending on the end of the world, the amount of money that can be paid out is almost infinity dollars if we take into account residuals that chip away at the syndication payout.

The gall of these meat puppets stealing his money Berman must think furiously.

Did you ever wonder what would happen if Greenpeace door knockers delivered pamphlets about the numerous raging global ecological catastrophes in Careville?

Could the Carebear Stare take out a Japanese whaling ship?

And I still don't get what you're arguing. I don't think there's been any disagreement about the definitions of "screen time" and "character development."

Other posters have written fairly thorough posts about the amount of focus Kes got throughout seasons 2 and 3. For a secondary character, she has one of the more substantial roles.

The number of lines and the amount of screen time she got is less important to me than the impression she left. I have a good idea of who this character is, I could give a detailed description of her personality, and she captured my imagination to point of making me wonder about the parts of her life we didn't see. This is a lot more than I can say for most of the other secondary characters.

Kes is more noble than Berman.

After Before and After, Kes had a choice...

    Janeway of her Child.

    B'Elanna or her Grandchild.

She chose to save real people over hypothetical people.

Berman on the other hand killed off the Kes ratings he did have in favour of the Hypothetical Seven ratings that he might have.

Kes did follow a colorful suit
She'd heard it came with leola root
    but that fizzled and soured
    When when the producers empowerd
    A comely Borg babe boot.

She didn't even remember those people, she barely learned their names. She's much more attached to Janeway. Also the thought of mating with Tom probably helped the decision along.

    Actually.

Kes had no memories when she died.

as she was traveling back in time she didn't remember anything of her old life/lives, she just retained her new memories after each jaunt.

Are we sure that when they pulled her out of the biotemporal chamber in season three that she could remember the past at all?

As of the 21st episode of seaosn 3, with a exception of less than an hour flitting about in the future, little kes was a blank slate, with barely any loyalty to anyone on that ship.

    She was faking it.

That's the problem, Kes wasn't a secondary character.
    She was a main one.

Gozar the Goizarian, if anything is Jewishy.

Or do you mean the First Church of Bill Murray?
