I am sooo for this movie! When it comes out on dvd the wife and I will do a Robot Jox/Pacific Rim night! Love me some giant robots!

Even though this could be considered an attempt to make a live-action Japanese big-robot movie, it can't help but look, visually, like a derivative mashup of Transformers and Iron Man. The intercutting between the exterior and interior shots is similar to cutting of Tony Stark's head inside the helmet. So it just looks like a usual Hollywood pitch session: "Get This! It's Transformers meets Iron Man!!! We'll even put a big glowy-thing on the robots' chests!"
Yeah, the concept is cool, but so far the trailers just aren't doing it for me. The effects aren't anything we haven't seen before, and the tone reminds me a bit too much of a Battleship or Transformers.
Are any of these any good, even for entertainment value? About 10 years ago, I got the movie Python as a gag gift for my birthday, and my friends and I watched it that night. It was obviously a horrible rip-off of Anaconda, but it was entertaining in that MST3K kind of way. Best part was that even though it was low-budget, it featured Casper Van Dien, Robert Englund, and even Wil Wheaton. Jenny McCarthy had a minor role, too. I still have that DVD today.
^There's a good chance it'll end up on SyFy's Saturday night movie. A lot of the Asylum stuff ends up there.
I did a little research, and they make a ton of movies. Wow, I had no idea. This just makes me want to go to Amazon and see if I can order a bundle of Asylum movies, just to have them on hand for gag-gifts at parties (or white elephant gifts). I, for one, am totally cool with this company existing and making their movies, and anyone who buys them expecting the real deal deserves what they get.
It's just "The Asylum." Art Asylum is the company (now subsumed into Diamond Select) that makes those really accurate Star Trek toys. Pretty sure they wouldn't like the comparison.
i just don't get it - Obvious stilted dialogue boucing off obvious CGI robots and monsters. If it were meant to be a parody of the old Kaiju films I might be there, but frankly (even with the talent involved and updated SFX) this looks no better than Emmerich's Godzilla At least the Asylum trailer made me giggle... though I will obviously be passing on that too. A shame, as Del Toro is a fun film maker. I guess it's just the wrong subject matter for me and it seems the Mountains of Madness plans are out of the window given his current schedule Hugo - Would love to be wrong though
His Mountains of Madness project fell through. You can see a bit of inspiration from that in this movie with the Kaiju coming from a rift in space located at the bottom of the ocean.
The movie is supposed to be fun and remind us of our time when we bashed our robot toys with oru monster toys together and have them fight.. it's pure fun and an hommage to all Kaiju movies (they even use the term Kaiju in the movie) del Toro style. I just can't wait to see a non-Michael Bay explosionfest and the fact that it's made by del Toro makes me even hopeful we'll see a good one.
