I just watched the newest addition to the Star Trek franchise since becoming a Trekker. I noticed that Scotty says "So I
tested it on Admiral Archer's prize beagle."

First of all this is not very canon because Porthos would be long dead by then without some kind of technology that would allow dogs to have the life span of a human. The first time I watched the movie it registered no thought but now I am very sad that Porthos had his life ended in such a way, if indeed it is referring to Porthos. It also seems out of character for Captain Archer to volunteer Porthos or any other dog he had a strong emotional bond with for such an experiment. Why not use a Klingon or Travis. :guffaw:

I just wanted to gather everyone's thoughts on this. And lets have a moment of silence for the cutest little guy on the whole Enterprise series. Sorry if this thread is lame or has been done before.

It was an in-joke for fans who had seen "Broken Bow". Travis says to Malcolm, when beaming up cargo that Archer "Wouldn't even put his dog though this thing".
He shouldn't have changed his mind!

But actually I got the vibe from the film that Scotty did it without Archer's permission.

I'd assume the dog in STXI is Porthos XXIV (or whatever), but you could always say that alien liver transplant from "A Night in Sickbay" gave him alien lizard super life expectancy :)

(Also "not very canon" is wrong. If it's on TV or film Trek it's 100% canon whether it makes sense or not!)

Yeah, I always figured the beagle that went through Scotty's experimental transporter was a long-way-down-the road successor of Porthos, perhaps even a descendant.

I suppose I have misinterpreted the meaning of the word then.

Actually, some people think it's Paramount that has misinterpreted the word.

To make a long story short, only the Catholic Church can decide what's canon in Star Trek.

Wait, no, that's not right. But there is Every Fan's Canon Primer.

Returning to the subject of Porthos... if you read Alan Dean Foster's novelization of Trek XI,
the dog rematerializes at the end of the story.

Personally, I think Portho's was a secret Borg drone who had been disconnected from the hive mind. His nano probes simply regenerated his beagle cells his entire life. That's why he was able to live for all these years for so long.

At least that's my 2 cents worth, anyways.

A Borg Beagle? I'd rather see a Borg tribble. I's like to see Star Trek XII begin with Porthos Jr. rematerializing.

I was wondering if Archer's dog was going to get a mention in Alan Dean Foster's Star Trek sequel novel, Refugees. Then the bastards cancelled it :(

Could you imagine trying to catch a dog in that engineering section?

    Keenser vs. Porthos. It's on!

People who own dogs often get another once their current one dies. Someone once said, "Life is a series of dogs."

I think there's not enough Porthos. That's what I think.

I wish Porthos could have helped defend the ship during Season 3. I think it would have been really cool if rocket launchers could have deployed out of his sides and then fire as some type of defense mechanism or something.

I mean, I think it really would have ramped up the Xindi Arc if you ask me.

Why don't we just have a K-9 squad of German Shepards and Dobermans that get set loose in the corridors every time there's an intruder. Kind of like on "Hogan's Heros" when they unleash the dogs every time there's an escape. That would scare the hell out of unsuspecting aliens.
