How different would things have been if TOS had been made in the 70s?

I was wondering what if TOS had been made in 1977 instead of 1967? How different would you think it would have been?

I would hope that it would have been a lot less sexist. As progressive as Roddenberry was on racism, he had a long way to go in the '60s when it came to women.

TMP had a female captain. Would have been a refreshing difference to see the series do the same.

    More earth tones.

Shaggier hair, a little bit more so than during the real third season.

    More heroic-sounding and operatic music.

    The Klingons would've looked scarier.

Harry Mudd would be in a straight-up leisure suit with all the frills.

Funk music during the spacier, weirder moments, like in TAS.

There would be some sort of corruption within Starfleet or the Federation.

There would've been an analogue to the Energy Crisis. I'm not sure how but there would've been.

It would have looked aesthetically more like BSG.

Instead of space hippies there would have been space bee gees.

Instead of miniskirts, Uhura and Rand would be in hot pants.

When Kirk's shirt ripped, there would have been a mat of chest hair there rather than the shaved look.

It's a hard question to answer seriously, because if there had been no Star Trek in the '60s, then the shape of SFTV in the '70s would've been profoundly different. It's hard to say what trends would or wouldn't have existed. For instance, ST pioneered the idea of SF as serial adult drama rather than the former divide between kid-oriented series (like the Irwin Allen shows) and adult-oriented anthologies (Twilight Zone, Outer Limits). It also pioneered significant advances in special effects techniques for television, such as the use of bluescreen FX rather than ships hanging on wires in front of black velvet starscapes. It gave existing FX artists more experience and inspired others to become FX artists, so without it, the FX revolution of the late '70s would've been delayed. And without the popularity of ST, there might never have been a Star Wars for late-'70s SFTV shows to imitate and borrow FX artists from.

So it wouldn't really work to say that if ST had been delayed until the '70s, it would've been like the SF shows that existed in the '70s. Because if ST hadn't come along when it did, those SF shows wouldn't have existed at all or would've been very different.

SPACE: 1999 meets BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (Original)?

Think "disco astronauts". I don't know why, but since I started looking over this thread I keep thinking of either John Travolta or Henry Winkler portraying Captain Kirk, and it's all downhill from there. The tone would not have been so optimistic. More like "how the Hell did humanity make it into space?" :rommie:

Seriously though, I agree with Christopher. TOS in the 60's came along at the right time and made a lasting impact. The whole genre would've been completely different if TOS had hit the airwaves in the late 70's. As "jiggle TV" was a sign of those times, I would not be surprised if someone would've tried to show Uhura, Chapel or Rand in a bikini. My sole holdout of hope in such a scenario would've been the success of KUNG FU a few years earlier. If we assume KUNG FU had made it on the air "on schedule", maybe TOS still could've flowered creatively. I know it seems strange, but I look upon TOS and KUNG FU as being distant cousins, creatively speaking.

Oh, and I'm taking it those baggy uniforms were that way because they were just preproduction shots. They look like something from a convention.

My guess is that it would have been less like a forces ship with ranks and a chain of command (as it would have been further away from the 2nd World War). I think it would have been more like a group of friends going around exploring planets.

How is that different from what TOS actually did? Roddenberry was constantly modifying the female guest stars' costumes to have less material. He would've had them running around naked if he could've gotten away with it. (And in fact, I gather that the one non-Trek feature film he produced and wrote, Roger Vadim's Pretty Maids All in a Row, was one of the very first mainstream American motion pictures to feature nude scenes after the R rating permitting them was introduced.)

Interesting analogy. I never saw the similarity before, but I do now. We reach.

I agree. Star Trek and Kung Fu were both unconventional, philosophical shows whose creators got them on the air by disguising them as Westerns.
