What movies do you like in genres that you usually don't like a whole lot? Acouple of examples from me: Musicals: 1776. Usually can't stand musicals, but this movie grabs me every time it's on TV, and i usually pull out the DVD and watch on the 4th of July. Not completely accurate historically, but very entertaining. Especially Howard Da Silva as Ben Franklin and William Daniels as John Adams. Westerns: Silverado. Westerns generally have never held my interest. A couple exceptions exist, including this movie (also Dances With Wolves). The story is interesting and it has a good cast all around. Especially Linda Hunt, Kevin Kline, and an interesting character played by John Cleese. How about the rest of you?
Agree w/Silverado. Also, I'm not a "rom-com" kind of guy at all, but I watch Pretty Woman whenever it comes on.
Musicals: I really love the Singing in the Rain and Chicago, but have never had much interest in seeing any others. Gangster Movies: These have never done much for me, except maybe for The Departed. Kung Fu Movies: About the only ones I like are the artier ones like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.
This was the first thing that came to my mind. I also don't like romantic comedies, but When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle are both extremely well done. It's probably just a Nora Ephron thing...
I don't like horror movies, but I can stomach them if they're horror-comedies, like Zombieland or Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.
Musicals: Singin In The Rain It does all the things I usually hate in musicals, yet it's completely awesome. Superhero films: Hellboy I & II Part of it is because of Del Toro's visual direction. But a lot of it is also because, for a movie billed based on the main character has an episode, it's really an emotional story about humans treating non-humans like crap.
I'm not sure what genre it would be in, but a movie I love that's out of my usual frame of reference is Miss Congeniality. Anytime I come across it on TV I can watch it. I think it is so funny... Same thing with Overboard. Not my normal cup of tea, but that movie is hilarious, and sweet.
I'm not at all a horror guy, but I rather like the following ones nonetheless: Psycho, The Birds The Mist Game Change Alien, Prometheus (I see Aliens as action, not horror) Mientras Duermes (Sleep Tight) ... And I didn't much mind The Initiation, either. (See: Zuniga, Daphne. )
I normally don't care for romantic comedies, but I was drawn to Love, Actually because of the cast, and I wound up loving it. Movies that include zombies are almost always an instant turn-off, but I've really enjoyed the Resident Evil movies.
Not much for romcoms, but I do like I.Q. with Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins and Walter Mathau. Mathau as Einstein is wonderful as are his 3 amigos.
There was a nice little reference to Daniels' Adams in one episode of St Elsewhere. I know that there's some horror movie that I do love, but I can't remember it! Even asking my husband. He's my external hard drive.
I don't normally like romantic comedies, but I really liked both 13 Going on 30 and A Walk to Remember.
