I'm hoping you guys might be able to recommend a good detective show on Netflix.

I've pretty much exhausted all Sci-Fi series that interest me and I've recently started getting interested in action mystery type shows. Netflix's suggestions are good, but I don't know much about all the hundreds of shows that show up other than the cover images and "you watched X so we think you like Y"

I absolutely loved Life . . . Awake was phenomenal. I'm enjoying Burn Notice (Bruce Campbell FTW)
I'm interested in Castle, but I don't think it's on Netflix yet . . . are there any non CSI cop/detective/mystery/action shows that are on Netflix that are worth checking out?

I don't know what's on Netflix and I don't know whether you're into 'private eye' type shows or shows about police. But your list above seems fairly diverse, so I'd recommend the following:

    NYPD Blue

    The Shield

    Southland

    The Wire

    Boomtown (sadly short-lived)

    Homicide: Life on the Street

Whitechapel--one of the best series I've found lately. The relationship between the lead characters is fascinating.

    Luther
--Idris Elba is all kinds of awesome.

Wire in the Blood-- a local psychiatrist is used to track down murders and serial killers. A gripping and brutal show with great lead actors.

    Boomtown-short but brilliant.

Castle is indeed on Netflix, by the way. Not my favorite show, though.

I second and third Luthor. FANTASTIC.

I would also check out the BBC's Sherlock. Yes. The modern day Sherlock Holmes. It's brilliant.

You COULD go all old school on Netflix. Magnum and Rockford Files are there.

    ^Rockford, well, Rocks.

And if you're going retro, Kojak probably still holds up well, ditto Hill Street Blues

I gotta go back to Law & Order.

I like any L&O-universe show, but the original is and always will be my favorite. For one simple reason: it is basically actor-proof. As little characterization as possible. No whiny soap opera shit. It's all about the procedural.

Or you could go with one of the classics: COLUMBO.

Don't know if it's on Netflix, but Murdoch Mysteries is a good one, set in Victorian era Toronto, ie 1890's. It's quite fresh and interesting.

    Castle.

    Castlecastlecastlecastle.

    Castle.

I wouldn't trade that show for 7 guaranteed seasons of Firefly, it's just that good. :mallory:

so Castle, Dexter, and Justified will have to wait, but they're definitely on the list
I will definitely check out Luther

Try the UK (original) version of Touching Evil - esp. the third series.

The Shield, The Wire, Luther, Justified, and Homicide are the cop shows that come to mind immediately.

Another Homicide fan here, but it's not on Netflix, at least for streaming.
