I'm certainly not that harsh on First Contact, though I do think it's an overrated movie. Possibly the most overrated of all the Trek movies, but certainly not the worse Trek movie.

Does anyone actually think 1981 was the paragon of Who? That's Tom Baker's final season, which sucked for the most part. Specifically, we're talking about Warriors' Gate, Keeper of Traken and Logopolis, none of which I think very highly anyway.

1973 was the paragon of Who.

    You tell 'em!

Of course I just picked '81 randomly as a pre-2005 number. But you knew that and went along. Thanks.

I'm sure Nemesis had a trailer out several weeks before it's premiere.

    *Ahem*

There have been two trailers thus far for the 50th. But the unwashed general public masses couldn't see them. There's one coming but...uh, it's still in post. It's so super-special it's taken weeks, nay...MONTHS to put together!

There's a difference between promoting a film for the mass cinema market, one which will need to 'open big' and secure repeat viewing (as genre films are expected to do) and promoting a tv episode, which will air once on BBC1, probably again on BBC3 and then be available on iplayer.

Don't get me wrong, I'm more than keen to see a trailer or some footage from this episode, but we're not comparing like with like.

^Oh, don't get me wrong - I understand that. I was a bit miffed when the exclusive comic con trailer wasn't released to the public. However, I swallowed my disappointment with the expectation that something wouldn't be too far off for the average fan boy. That was some time ago and now with the special airing next month, isn't Joe Public due for something? (Or perhaps, aren't I due for something? Yes, I feel entitled.)

Of course I'll be giddy when get my fix, eventually.

I love Warriors' Gate, The Keeper of Traken, and Logopolis, all of which were broadcast in 1981. Season 18 is one of my favorites!

I'm not sure what this proves.

^ Warrior's Gate isn't a bad episode. It's probably the only good episode in the entire E Space saga.

That being said, I wouldn't mind a return to E Space in order to bring back Lalla Ward for a guest appearance.

Yeah. I have no idea if the 50th Anniversary special will be better or worse than Star Trek: Nemesis, but I don't see much of a parallel factually in order to compare the two. You could compare one of hundreds of movies and television episodes just as easily.

Personally, I find State of Decay to be the best of the E Space trilogy.

I enjoyed all 3 stories in the e-space trilogy about the same. They weren't stellar but they were ok.

Warrior's Gate, Keeper of Traken, and Logopolis are a fabulous run for Doctor Who. Castrovalva is just as good but it's in the next season so I don't know if we're counting that as part of the run.

Castrovalva aired in 1982. It has no bearing in determining worth of 1981.

Ouch! Forgotten already? You were just down ther
Yeah. Star Trek V has its problems. (The sets are over-lit. The special effects are shitty. Uhura does a naked fan dance 20 years after anyone actually wanted to see her do a naked fan dance. Captain Kirk wrestles a 3-breasted cat-woman. And is searching for God an appropriate subject for the devoutly athiestic Star Trek?) But at the same time, the Kirk/Spock/McCoy triumvirate just charms the hell out of me every time I watch it!

Agreed. This should feel like a hugely satisfying tribute to the show's massive 50 year history. But instead, it seems like they're just using it as an excuse to pander to the 10th Doctor/Rose 'shippers. And then wasting valuable time creating this new fake Doctor when you've got a criminally underused Paul McGann just sitting there!

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe, despite the lack of actual major appearances by pre-2005 characters, they'll still manage to hit the right tone of honoring the classic series while also not subjecting us to the grim realization of just how old Tom Baker, Peter Davison, & Colin Baker are. I suppose I should have some faith in Steven Moffat. He & I have generally been on the same page over the years (concerning both Doctor Who & Sherlock).

And I suppose I should remember that "The Three Doctors" was an excellent story even though it wasn't full of naval-gazing & continuity porn. If the internet had been around in 1973, I suppose we'd all be complaining about how they only managed to bring back Patrick Troughton for the 10th anniversary, with no appearances by Jamie or Susan or Ian or Barbara, etc.

My favorite of the E-Space trilogy is "Full Circle." I like the notion of just how far things have evolved over the years and that Adric is a descendant of the swamp people. The design of the marsh men is also quite well done.

"State of Decay" just kinda sits there. It's a horror pastiche but it lacks that Robert Holmes magic touch that made all the earlier horror pastiches work.

    I don't understand "Warrior's Gate" at all.

"The Keeper of Traken" has it's moments but there are also bits of that story that I don't understand. In particular, I don't get the Melkur. I mean, I know it's really just the Master's TARDIS in disguise but I don't get what the people of Traken think it's supposed to be. It's one of those stories that I just have a hard time following while I'm watching it because I always feel 2-steps behind (kinda like "Ghost Light").

"Logopolis" is just tired because you can tell that Tom Baker is tired and has already mentally checked out of the show.

Actually, my favorite story from Season 18 is probably "Meglos." I think it's got a lot of really solid guest stars, and it looks like Tom Baker was in a good mood that month when they shot it.

As long as said "surprises" aren't River Song, the Paternoster Gang, and Captain Jack.
