I agree, the farm animal joke is not only crass but so juvenile and unworthy of being in Star Trek. It just ripped me out of the movie for a few minutes and thoroughly disgusted me that a main character would say something so stupid, and belongs on inane shows like Jackass instead. One of the many reasons that Star Trek 2009 doesn't resonate with me the same way as the rest of Trek, and to be hones, almost ruined the movie for me.

Archer's comment was sexist and insensitive to domestic violence, or at least about the subject of violence of men on women. It should never have been said.

It was even worse when Data says that to Worf.

Those were some of the most painful moments in Trek.

Because it's awesome! but yeah, it is pretty dumb.

Agreed! This is one of the best examples of why the first 2 seasons of TNG are so hard to get through!

I found "ugly bags of mostly water" hilarious.


Data and Joe Piscopo making spastic noises in the holodeck in "The Outrageous Okona" is pure torture. In fact, that gets my vote for the very worst thing in all of Trek.

From Voyager:

"What if we designed the flying machine to glide, like a sparrow?"

Janeway explaining to Davinci how to make a flying machine is one of the most nauseating parts of Voyager.

Also "I see your trip home will be shorter than you expected."

I really, really hate that scene from Unamatrix Zero where the Borg Queen contacts Janeway. The way she approached that situation was the polar opposite of the way the Borg do things.

Don't forget To Be or Not to Be with Jack Benny, which poked fun at the Nazis and the SS during World War II. Or A Night in Casablanca with the Marx Bros, which played a Nazi villain for laughs as early as 1946.

As for the the "farm animal" line, I don't have strong feelings about it, but I find it intriguing that some people don't think that anything "crass" or vulgar belongs in STAR TREK, which apparently is supposed to be dignified and highbrow at all times.

I disagree. One of things I like about the reboot is that it added a jolt of rock-and-roll to a franchise that, arguably, was starting to feel a little too stately and refined. Star Trek is not Downton Abbey, folks. It needs a dash of pulp vitality to keep from getting too "cerebral."

In that sense, that line was a success in that it helped bring things down to Earth a bit and established that these were not perfect people who only speak in the most cultured and civilized of terms at all times. I mean, it's not like Uhura was addressing the Federation Council at the moment; she was fending off a horny guy at a bar.

She was supposed to say something classy and profound?

I liked that bit, too.

The "oath of celibacy" line bugs me because it has no context as it appears in the film. Unless you're somehow familiar with the hitherto-unmentioned Deltan species, which is explained nowhere in the film or in any of the previous TV episodes, it's just a bizarre non sequitor that comes out nowhere and is never referred to again.

It's as though some odd bit of trivia from the STAR TREK: PHASE II series bible got awkwardly inserted into the script even though it made no sense at all unless you'd read about Deltans in a magazine article or cast interview or something.

Folks from the present (relatively speaking) are usually, if not always, going to see themselves as superior to their predecessors and lots of things about them. Folks today would look back at the kind of clothes Aristocrats wore back in the past (including the makeup they wore, including men) and see them as ridiculous costumes as well.

It's not Picard being deliberately insulting, it's just how a guy 300+ years from now would think of our own attire including what our soldiers wore.

Also in the context of the episode, Q was wearing that uniform to remind humanity of a part of its past where armies invaded other countries for territory and personal power with no regard for the lives lost in the wake. Picard's characterization of a 'costume' was meant to disown unjust wars and invasions from his cultural past, not to show any disrespect for those who defend their own country.

And some people think Trek TOS is "dated"? Nothing dates faster than contemporary slang and colloquialisms -- especially in a show that's supposed to take place centuries in the future.

I liked the movie but yes, the absolute worst thing about the movie was the contrived Spock/Kirk role reversal crap.

In Star Trek Voyager Future's End Part I when Captain Braxton enters Voyager's time frame to destroy her and Janeway says

"I won't sacrifice this ship and it's crew based off a 10 second conversation, i need more proof."

I think it's pretty clear she would not do that, so i guess it's kind of redundant seeing as no Captain in a stable mental state would do that. I mean have your entire crew die and your ship destroyed for a guy that says your responsible for something in the future.
