With no intention to offend anyone, but while I can accept being related to my friend's dog (she is such a lovely animal), being related to baobabs is pretty difficult for me stomach. I mean, they are damn ugly.

In all seriousness, if you look at them thinking about the evolution of the species in mind, and how we appeared amidst them, they actually start looking really beautiful all of a sudden... It's mindbogglingly incredible. If you stare long enough, you can see how nature was randomly trying to evolve in every direction, hitting a stone law in almost every way, with each species representing another step in one of the extreme galleries of an endless bizarre maze of possibilities.

Why people care about ethnicity when our most distant relatives are so much more fascinating, and are so much more important for who we are?

My little sister is like that, but her hair is jet black. This girl is so pale that when a friend of mine visited and saw a photo of both my sisters and I, in which I'm wearing blue, my older sister is in green, and my pale little sister is in black, she said, "That's a cool picture, but why are you and Rachel in color and Flo black and white? Ohhhhhhh....."

ETA: Since when did the BBS start thanking me for my posts. It's polite and all, but kind of annoying.

Unfortunately, German citizenship law doesn't work that way. (Well, at least it didn't at the time. Nowadays it kind of does, but not really.)

^ I see. So even if I had been born in Germany at that time, I would still be exclusively a US citizen today?

I'm pretty sure that my two nephews are automatically dual citizens of the US and the UK (since my sister is American and her husband is British). But like you said, it varies by country.

Yup, pretty much. There have always been exceptions but generally, our citizenship laws are designed to prevent dual citizenship to occur. They were also based on descendance rather than place of birth. Nowadays, people born here to parents who've lived here legally for a while do get dual citizenship but they have to decide which one to keep eventually.

The UK and US laws are much better in that regard.

White, white, white. So white, I'm pink!

Recently posted that I've found out I'm 1/4 Irish, making me 3/4 Russian-y/Eastern European-y. The Irish got here in New England and the rest came before WW1--no slaveowners in my background. Raised Jewish, very lapsed.

Hubby is Mexican, looks Asian though, and is at least 1/4 Spanish blood (blond/blue-eyed type, though Hubby was dark-haired/dark-eyed but pale skin). Raised Catholic, very lapsed.

Italians aren't white? If my Italian/Irish/Mexican wife was any more pale she'd be translucent. ;)

Me: North-Western European (English, Scots, Irish, Welsh) and Swiss-German.
