The term Space Opera has gained new traction in recent years, thanks to a new generation of writers giving it the credit it deserves. There's even an anthology called (I think) The Space Opera Renaissance. I'm happy with that, since I've always felt it was a legitimate genre. Space Opera can apply to anything from Buck Rogers to Forbidden Planet to Star Trek and even Foundation.

Actually, I agree with Christoper. I don't even like to acknowledge this "light" and "dark" business as it's come to be used in contemporary culture, which is why I put it in quotes. The idea that ponderous faux cynicism is somehow more substantive than more balanced fare, or that anything that doesn't exhibit ponderous faux cynicism is campy or cheesy, doesn't sit well with me at all.

As for Warehouse 13, it's certainly not nihilism porn, but it's not a situation comedy either. It's solid drama about characters that have a sense of humor (mostly). They dealt with Pete's alcoholism, Myka's cancer, Steve and Claudia's family issues, Artie's troubled past and present, and Leena's death, and they've done so in a manner that's far more mature and adult than most shows that try to impress us with how mature and adult they are.

In the lap of squalor I assure you.
There is a season and a half of Starhunter on my hard drive.

I am exploring forgotten realms of awful none of you could possibly fathom.

I enjoy Starhunter, though the first Series DVD set has the first 8 or 9 episodes in a mixed up order

Powers, which was previously developed as a TV series by FX, is now in development for PlayStation, which is looking to get into producing programming. From Deadline:

Err, how would it be available for those of us who don't play video games?

As with other programming produced for streaming outlets, it should be released on DVD/Blu-ray at some point.

Awesome, I'm pretty sure my Playstation still works. But the 320x240 resolution is really going to suck.

I'd assume Sony will put it on their Movies Unlimited service on their smart TVs and website. Microsoft will put theirs on Xbox Video for Windows 8 and things like that.

I suspect that they will have to water down Powers too much to be enjoyable. It needs to be on HBO or something.

If it's on a streaming service it can be how ever they want it to be.

I know, but is PlayStation going to produce HBO-like programming?

Why not? Netflix does, I'm assuming Amazon probably will, once they get round to making anything worthwhile. Microsoft have made one Halo show that wouldn't be out of place, so I can't imagine their new stuff will be watered down. So I don't see why Playstation would take a different route.

Speaking of Amazon, they picked up the Chris Carter (X-Files) show, The After the other day.

"An Amazon Original Pilot: From Chris Carter, creator of The X-Files. Eight strangers are thrown together by mysterious forces and must help each other survive in a violent world that defies explanation."

The pilot is available for those who have Amazon Prime. I thought it was quite good. It was the most Lostish feeling pilot I've seen since well, Lost.

I thought anybody could watch the Amazon pilots? Or do they put them up just for prime members before everyone else?

I believe it's limited time for everyone then prime only afterwards.

I don't even know how to watch Amazon shows. You'd think they would advertise to me since I'm a member.

I don't know, I guess I just expected a gaming system to be more geared toward general audiences. I hope you're right. Powers needs to be uncensored.
