TOS: Doctor's Orders has the Lahit and Ornae of Flyspeck (1212 Muscae IV) seek admission to the Federation. Starfleet wanted them as members badly. The treaty signed on behalf of the Federation (by Kirk), the ;At, Lahit and Ornae used "Flyspeck" as the official designation of the planet (seriously).

The novel may still be part of the modern continuity because a Lahit appears as Starfleet CMO in The Poisoned Chalice. Also, the novel only contradicts the established continuity by stating no planets with more than one sentient species has been found by the lat 2260s.

How does that contradict the continuity?

I like the list. Some possible additions below.

Xyrillians - Trip knocked one up with the rowboat scene
Menk/Valakians from Dear Doctor listed membership around 2236
    Coridanite - 2267
    Arcturians
    Melkotians
Medusans - Listed as one of the oldest Federation races.

The Xindi Homeplanet - Six sentient species.

That planet from "Dear Doctor" - The Menk and the Velakians

Possibly others that I can't think of at the moment?

Right, so Arvada III (former colony), Caldos II (Scottish fetishist planet) and Magna Roma (Roman people) are all promoted to the list as confirmed members. As is Medusan Homeworld (thank you, Use of Time).

    Added to the 'maybe' list:

Ana'Siuol (from Mere Anarchy book five)
    Canopus Planet
Lembatta Prime (definite Federation world, though whether member or colony is unclear)
    Pangea (stout human offshoots)
Valakis (people who spit in Darwin's eye)

Well, Earth didn't really need to be "found"--we already knew where it was! ;)

Aren't there at least three sentient species on Earth? There are humans, humpbacks are one cetacean species, and dolphins are another.

^The question was whether there was more than one. I didn't specify there were only two.

Excellent job, Deranged Nasat. I really, really, REALLY like this thread - it is one of a very limited number of things (as in, I can't readily remember any others), aside from pictures, that I have ever made a point of copying to my computer to archive.

trampledamage, would this resource merit being stickied, and added to as Trek Lit progresses? And if so, is there any way to move comments #31 and #32 to being comments #2 and #3?

Deranged Nasat, those photo lists are an incredible resource. I have been wanting to think more about the more obscure Federation races for some time, and your lists are the perfect gateway for doing that. Thank you!

The software wouldn't let me move the posts out of their chronological position, so I've merged them with the first post.

Hope this doesn't cause any problems.

Having a new sticky reminded me that we still need a new FAQ. Anyone working on that?

I love aliens, so this thread is amazing!

Thought I would just throw out another few suggestions:
    - Benzenite (mentioned in the DS9 episode where they go undercover as Klingons) a race with breathing tubes--a description that differs them from Benzite (Laporim was at the Academy with Sisko, whilst Mordock was the first Benzite to enter Starfleet in 2364)
    - Craynid (from "Saratoga") they were a sort of insectoid race
    - Rigel IV (if memory serves) Rigelians from "Starfleet Year One", described as having silvery skin, three-fingered hands, red eyes and a bony ridge on their brow and temples

Since no one else has mentioned them, I'd like to nominate the Vissians for membership. I have them as part of the first group of worlds to join right after the founding of the Federation, along with Draylax & Denobula (who I have as a founding race of Starfleet but NOT the Federation).
