I found someone who published a tutorial on YouTube about STO. She created a character named "Tight Pants" (a kind of Vulcan/Trill mix) with enoooorrrrmous...er, tracks of land. Ahem.

She named her ship USS Pants.

Found someone else who named their ship USS Incompetence.

This is kind of a bad pun, but...

    USS Mannheim, Steamrunner class

    (Hint: ROLLER, not runner)

    I said out, dammit!
A few of my kitbashes are named based on the donor kits:
The USS Val'Walo was made from a Gundam called a Val-Walo.
The cargo shuttle named Voyager was made from the Aurora cartoon Fantastic Voyage Voyager.
The Klingon Mer'Q 9 battlecruiser was made from the Pegasus Models Mercury 9 spaceship.
The Perry was made from a Revell Perry Rhodan model.
Starbase 51, "Pegasus Base," is made of Pegasus Models flying saucers.

The USS Ascender is so-named because it's backwards (Ass-Ender).

The USS Tiburon looks shark-like to me.

    USS Peregrine is a bird-of-prey.

I like this. I may have to rethink mine.

    Or, just build two ships....

I remember feeling intrigued by the idea of a ship called El Dorado, i.e. naming a starship after a fictional place. Then we got an actual space shuttle named Atlantis!

So how about Nebula-class USS Shangri-La?

El Dorado wasn't a fictional place, he was a person, the Chief of the Muisca tribe in South America. And sure, name a ship after him.

    :)

I'm not sure if you're aware of it because it wasn't mentioned in the post, but USS Shangri-La CV-38 was a US aircraft carrier for almost 30 years. The name commemorated the Halsey-Doolittle Raid of 1942.

I always thought of Pacer, Gremlin and Matador classes when I heard "Ambassador class."

Speaking of real American warship names, I was researching some the other day and noticed not a few... intriguing and unexpected entries. For those who want authentic US Navy names for their ship in the finest Starfleet tradition, all of the following are available to you (occasional commentary offered in the spirit of good humour and the profoundest respect, of course, for the fine men and women of the US Navy):

    A - D

    Admittance
    Aggressor
    Almond

    Haste
    Illusive
    Impeccable
    Impervious
    Improve
    Impulse
Ice Boat [included for the charming literalism – I can imagine a crew hailing a planet with the message “this is the Federation starship Starship...]

    Inflict
Intelligent Whale [from the Dept. Of Important Clarifications]
    Invade
    Isis

    J - N

Jekyl [uh... wasn't Hyde supposed to be the bad-ass?]
    Joy

Letter B [maybe the name changed each time the crew memorized one more letter of the alphabet?]
    Logic
    Lovelace
    Lucid [for the moment]
    Luster
Manlove [and there is nothing wrong with that... but imagining sailors explaining to people what ship they worked on is still kinda fun]
    Mirth
Nero [when you're naming your ship for Roman Emperors, go for the undisputed greatest]
    Nonsuch

    P - R

Panda [because nothing strikes awe into the enemy like this fearsome predator]

    Report
    Retaliation
    Rival

    S

Sac City [I know there's probably a perfectly good explanation for this one, but still...]
    Saucy [shamelessly saucy!]
    Scribner
    Scurry
    Shoveler
    Skirmish
    Snark
Snatch [even barring the obvious slang reference... how was this name supposed to have positive connotations?]
    Spectacle
    Splendor
    Staunch
    Stout
    Stump
    Sturdy
Superior [should always be captained by the biggest, most conceited snob in the fleet]

    Temptress
    Tickler

    Vixen
    War Bug
Yo Ho [and her sister ships “Hip Hip” and “Huzzah!”]
    Zipalong

In the spirit of naming starships after 1970's automobiles (USS El Dorado). I give you the USS Cordoba. The seats on the bridge are made of a very special rare material.

Well, when you have to come up with 300+ fish or "denizens of the deep" names for submarines things are bound to get interesting; lets face it, fishermen have come up with some pretty colorful names for what's turned up in their nets over the centuries. But all kidding aside, Tang, Flasher, Wahoo and Harder have some of the proudest records in USN history.

I believe I've actually heard of the Harder (as in "Hit 'Em Again...", yes?). Yeah, I tried to stay away from anything that was obviously just a slightly humorous-sounding fish name, but I probably still have a few in there. :)

The video above was too funny. The Reliant is made by Chrysler. That explains why everything broke so easily. And the ship always seemed slow and sluggish.

I wasn't, no. Thanks for sharing!

Mind you, I also thought of USS Halcyon, USS Asgard, USS Kunlun, USS Lothlorien and USS Elysium.

Someone earlier mentioned different winged creatures from myth in line my original ship name Hippogriff. Some others come to mind:

    Harpy
    Roc
    Dragon
    Gryphon (wasn't this used already?)
    Phoenix (already used)
    Seraph
    Nephil
    Afreet
Archangel (also a city in Russia)
    Gabriel (or Jibreel)
    Metronon
    Azreal
    Israfel
    Michael
    Uriel

    Archangel is a nice one.

Not a winged creature, but a mythical sometimes-flying one is the Kirin.
