This summer, my children and I are starting to watch episodes of the original series. To date, we have watched Amok Time and the Doomsday Machine. Getting ready to pick another one for tonight. If you could only watch ten episodes of the original series, which ones would they be and why?
The trouble with tribbles! They'll love that one Assignment: Earth. One of my favourites, really fun story. A Piece of the Action is another of my favourites! That's 3 anyway :P
Arena, great fight, great message. A talking space Dinosaur and a homemade bazooka, what more could you want?
Only ten? Hmm... 1. "Arena" 2. "The City on the Edge of Forever" 3. "The Corbomite Maneuver" 4. "Day of the Dove" 5. "Journey to Babel" 6. "Mirror, Mirror" 7. "The Naked Time" 8. "Spectre of the Gun" 9. "The Tholian Web" 10. "The Trouble with Tribbles" There's a good spread between the three seasons there, and a decent mix of comedy and drama.
"Man Trap" "Where No Man Has Gone Before" "Balance Of Terror" "Galileo Seven" "Space Seed" [for your future viewing of WOK together] "Mirror, Mirror" "Doomsday Machine"[for your future viewing of TMP together] "Ultimate Computer" "Enterprise Incident" "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"
So great you're introducing them to Trek. Love to know what the think of it as you show them more I certainly plan to show Trek to my future children.
"The Trouble with Tribbles" was also the first one I showed my kids. Just great comedy, a decent brawl and all those cute furry things After that, it really depends on how old your children are. Episodes like "Where no Man has Gone Before", "City on the Edge of Forever" or "Spectre of the Gun" may bo a bit hard to comprehend (or too boring) for younger children. And especially since you want to get them hooked to Star Trek show them some real space adventures first. "Doomsday Machine", "Enterprise Incident" or "The Tholian Web" come to mind. Sadly however, it didn´t work with my kids: My son´s more into Clone Wars, and my daughter has other interests by now
Recently began the same thing. Started with Tribbles. Probably go with Doomsday next. Then Arena. (Younger one is seven, so Balance of Terror and City--two of my favourites--are likely to bore him)
My favorite still is: The Corbomite Maneuver (I first saw it at the age of 11 and loved it); that said, depending on the age of your kids, they may find it 'too talky' in spots. I'd also recommend: Arena Balance of Terror (Might also be considered 'too talky' in spots but still .) The Trouble With Tribbles The Ultimate Computer Elan of Troyius
I too have always had a soft spot for The Corbomite Maneuver. It's one of the first ST episodes I bought on VHS.
I hope your kids aren't too young, Amok Time is fairly mature. I would again claim the best episode is my all time favourite "Corbomite Maneuver". It has all the action and a great message at the end.
^ I started watching Trek when I was 13. At that time, Miri really was an appealing episode to me. Don't like it quite as well as I did back then, but it is something that would interest a kid.
