Transcendence trailers, Singularity movie w/ Johnny Depp & M. Freeman

One of the first direct plots dealing with the SIngualirty in a big budget, big name scifi film. Two trailers are avaialble:

Transcendence opens in theaters on April 8th, 2014.

Cast: Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, Morgan Freeman, Clifton Collins Jr., Josh Stewart, Cole Hauser, Cory Hardrict

Sci-Fi Thriller. Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed-to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can...but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will's thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

You realize it's not a "Yay, the Singularity is coming!" type movie, right? It's sort of taking the opposite tack from how you usually talk about the Singularity.

I mean, I could be wrong, but I'm going to go wild here and put the globe conquering AI deploying flesh and metal eating nanites in the negative depiction column.

Ten dollars the film end with people returning to an agrarian lifestyle.

Yup, I always allow for the fact things can go wrong. I explain why it's as likely or possible to go "right". Most scifi movies that directly tackle a technology are cautionary tales, and the most I can expect is that they will explore both sides. On the surface, this movie appears to cover a few of those bases, we have quotes of anti-technology and the reverse. Ultimately the movie has to have jeopardy unless it's an independent treatise movie, and that's what we'll have.

What I'd like to see: Depp uploads his mind, apparently there is a vast expansion of AI. The negatives are explored...Depp cannot control his boundaries as he's transcending, it takes on material form with the nanotech control of his environment, starts to change the face of the Earth...humanity is in effect "losing" as the Singularity approaches...but Depp's still-human, not totally machine derived AI eventually get's a grip on things..whether or not this is a positive outcome is left up to the viewer at the end, or for a sequel..

The reactions I am seeing from those in the "Singularity" community are onthe positive side. Some felt it would be a Frankenstein type movie, but the trailers are changing their perception somewhat.

You posted the equivalent of New Age nonsense that everyone here has thoroughly torn down, yet you stick your fingers in your ears like a true fundementalist and ignore them.

Actually I haven't seen anything torn down, in fact I've countered every argument and backed it up while seeing a lot of negativity based on bias rather than facts. Almost everything Ive seen since only bolsters my argument(there's just so much I don't bother posting all of it). I can only imagine what some of you were thinking as the predictions are becoming self-fullfilling (examples: Kurzweil at Google, AI research and brain mapping funding exploding, human computer interfaces--brain controlled limbs/bionics, the proliferation of clean energy especially after the driving force of Fukushima, Fusion successes hitting the news, et al) In effect, Im open to the latest data, and you're not. How's that for close-minded? But go ahead and continue to play with your pink ponies and ignore the world around you.

Anyway, The Singularity, Transhumanism is a strong meme, but will probably be better known after this movie comes out to the general populace.
