    Except he does care if not for any other reason than he's a professional. But beyond that, his name is forever attached, so anyone with half an ounce of common sense knows he has some degree of personal pride involved to ensure it continues to be a success.

    Not only that, but his company is still producing the third Trek installment. There's still reputation at stake.

    Exactly so.

    Abrams doesn't seem to be personally competitive with other filmmakers, but if Into Darkness exceeds the success of his first Star Trek movie as greatly as Hollywood people talking to the press seem to be assuming it will then his little trilogy here gets into pretty rarefied territory. He doesn't want to be the guy who fumbled his third movie.
