It isn't particularly convoluted or illogical, FSM. It may be that you found it confusing, but in terms of what the film actually tells us it holds together just fine.

Pretty much spot on. The examples of China in the 15th century and the Ottoman Empire after its peak in the early 17th century stand as very good analogies to the inward-looking nature of Kryptonian society (thus explaining the abandonment of space exploration, as the Chinese abandoned maritime exploration, scuttling the finest fleet in the world to date) and their blithe refusal to do anything in the face of evidence that something is seriously wrong mirrors many forms of cognitive dissonance found in real life (climate change denial being only one of several, though clearly the most direct analogy).

Man of Steel is not a flawless movie by any stretch, but overcomplicated is not among its flaws.

You guys are seriously getting your hopes up on Doomsday? Remember, this is supposed to be Superman vs. Batman...I don't see them squeezing Doomsday into that....

Now I don't read enough of Kirk5555's posts to know if he reiterated the point, but I was the one who said that...just ask Christopher, you'd think I'd kicked his grandmother down a flight of stairs or something....

(My phrasing was "kick the shit out of", though.)

    Zod.

Pay no attention to the council behind the curtain!

I'm not getting my hopes up on Doomsday. I hope they don't do Doomsday, I fear they ARE doing Doomsday. Doomsday isn't really a character, he was just an excuse to kill Superman so they could sell a lot of books. He was never that interesting to me. He's just a monster that punches hard. Bo-ring.

But, I think they just might be. It's a SUPERMAN sequel, yet they are already bringing in Batman AND Wonder Woman. It's like they don't have any confidence that they can do a sequel just about Superman. And it's not officially Superman VS. Batman... do you really think that the whole movie will literally be one against the other? It will be for a little bit, but, once a foe rears its head, it will take the two of them "working" together to bring down... Lex or Doomsday...

So, while I'm not hoping for Doomsday, I wouldn't be surprised if they do it just because after Lex, he's the most well known villain outside of Brainiac--and they just did a Kyptoinain thing, so...

Doomsday will provide the carnage porn that Snyder is looking for. You can't have a Superman movie without someone that Superman can punch for 15 to 20 minutes. And he ain't gonna punch Batman... or Bats will explode like a hotdog in a microwave.

Here's the problem with that, Superman punches Doomsday and Doomsday takes it.

    Meh?

No, it's Superman punches Doomsday, Doomsday goes flying, a building falls down. Doomsday gets up, he punches Superman, Superman goes flying, a building falls down. Rinse repeat. Collect 1 Billion dollars at the box office.

The movie will have the principals initially suspicious / ignorant of each other until they discover they have to team up against some larger threat.

Vandal Savage? Accompanied by some kind of mook super-brick for Superman and WW to knock around?

    Movie Doomsday vs. Comicbook Doomsday.

But this time the filmmakers will have learned their lesson from criticism of the first film, and will show Doomsday trying to save innocent civilians from Superman....

Yep, probably versus in the first half and allied in the second half.
Highly likely to be Lex Luthor.
    Maybe Metallo or Doomsday.

I really, really, really hope they don't go with Doomsday. I like the suggestion of Momoa as Vandal Savage, though Vandal and Lex (surely they'll have Lex?) in the same movie seems a bit too similar.

Metallo as the brick could work, or Parasite for something completely different.

Honestly, there was a part of me wishing we'd seen more of Kypton's last days, it was a lot more compelling than I'd expected.

Either one would better than Smallville's Doomsday.
