On the DVD, Qinto says that the idea of him taking the iconic role of Spock was suggested in an internet message board he read. Was it this one?

Oh God. He reads what we post?

....Quinto, I apologize if anything I've said on these boards has made you uncomfortable. (But, really, it's your fault for being indecently handsome.)

I was surprised to spot a young Quinto in an old CSI rerun the other day. He was playing a greasy chop-shop mechanic.

I wonder if he was against taking the role at first, and when he saw it suggested on the board, it changed his mind.

No, it couldn't have been this board. If he read this board his Spock would have been constantly shouting.

He did shout some, though, if you care to remember.

I think the whole shouting thing is a bit of military protocol. As first officer his job would be to take the commands of the captain and relay to the crew. Shouting is part of the barking of orders thing.

One of the things with taking on such an iconic role as Spock is that if you do it right you are perhaps marked as a the quintessential Spock (no pun intended). If you do it wrong it could be a career breaker. As so much of that profession is based on your last performance. So in one way you are somewhat type cast and the other you are outcast. A possible no win scenario (no pun intended here either). If you look at Nimoy's career post trek? By that I mean post TOS not the movie series. He couldn't find to much work outside of trek. Body Snatchers not withstanding.

I think he did a marvelous job too. Looking forward to seeing him again in STXII

Unfortunately that's an extremely valid point. Some of Trek's best have mostly found work behind the cameras. Satisfying artisically, I'm sure, but not the same recognition factor. We have a saying in our household whenever we see Trek alums onscreen: "So glad they're working!" My kid even popped that off seeing Jeri Ryan guesting on the TNT show-cannot remember the name. And I love the work Roxann Dawes is doing with TNT's the Closer.

You might want to take another look at Nimoy's filmography. While he did get somewhat typecast for playing Spock, he did go on to Mission Impossible and In Search Of as well as several different things. IIRC, it was Nimoy and Shatner who actually had the most post TOS work.

Leonard Nimoy is a renaissance man. He has directed, acted on stage and television, authored and has also become a respected photographer. That is hardly the same as "He couldn't find to much work outside of trek."
