I didn't mind it so much except for the fact that they were discussing the Ferengi, and all the exchange really got across to us is that different countries on Earth have different flags! :wtf:

The notion of evaluating cultures in such a manner didn't seem that inappropriate when the episode first aired. What struck me was the name Richter. I thought his scale was used to measure earthquakes!

Not sure I'd nominate for "Worst of the Franchise," but one of the worst Counsellor Obvious moments from TNG was from one of the episodes featuring Romulan Commander Tomolok. After a barbed, tense exchange on the viewscreen, they cut the feed and Troi helpfully supplies:

"There is great hostility behind his smile."

Why, thank you for that keen insight, Counsellor F***ing Sherlock. I'm sure nobody watching could have figured that out...

Star Trek always seemed to fall back on this nomenclature. I recall one episode where Scotty said a gigantic solar flare was a "such-and-such on the Ritter Scale". Not exactly the same, but so close as to make you wonder why they didn't just use something else.

Maybe nuTrek will eventually update it to the "Chipeska Scale". ;)

It just seems so easy to crreate something that sounds scientific. Heck, I can do it right here: "Marsden Scale", "VanRueth Scale", "Brecht Scale"...

    God, that was easy.

And Star Trek was always so good at creating cool-sounding medical terms: Cordrazine, Ryetalin, Synthacoccus Novae (sp.), Xenopolycethemia.

    I don't get it. :wtf:

    From TNG: Justice

"And I welcome this huge one."

    and later...

"... about this thick, this long."

Yeah, ranking culture wasn't the problem, really. The name of the scale was the worst part of it. But also using a grading system that sounds like the culture has to come back for summer school was weak. I suspect that that may have contributed to the sound of arrogance in the line that the poster upthread mentioned.

Well, if there's a Minus D, it stands to reason there's a Plus D...so at or around A would seem to be the starting point. Just what would that be?! :wtf:

God-like beings, such as the Organians in their true form?

Eh, I have a hard time believing that Richter's scale went that high. I sorta suspect that the Federation would get an A.

For me this was always an easy question.

Without anthing close it was this line from TATV:

TROI: It's sad. Commander Tucker had no idea he wouldn't make it back.

Big make-up caked fat Deanna giving away the plot and all...

But now we have a new movie where Spock loses it and yells "Khan!!"

So now I am confused again...

    Computer, end programme.

    In Roddenberry's novelization, he did.

It seems a scale like that would have to be constantly re-tooled to accommodate the new "energy" beings they encounter: Trelane's parents, the Day of the Dove whirlygig, the Dikironium cloud, the Organians, the Thasians, the Metrons, the Lights of Zetar, "Jack the Ripper", Gorgon, Sargon & Co.,...an ever-growing list to be ever-updated so as to seem meaningless! :wtf:

Yeah, not good. Luckily, the episode later got much better. And who'da thunk it that Wesley in a bed of flowers would be the impetus for dramatic improvement?

From The Most Toys, after a gazillion attempts to get Data to put on the new clothes Fajo brought for him:

To each his own, but why didn't that part sound right?

From Heart of Glory, where they're rescuing klingon survivors and rushing off a ship about to explode--

Another corny sounding line from early TNG ...

This is just awful dialogue, the acting everything..
Oh wait, this was the Doctor's fantasy.....it's still awful

Heh...don't think anyone has mentioned "The Icarus Factor" yet. The whole B.S. forced conflict between Riker and daddy Riker and the insipid Anbo-jyutsu nonsense, "the ultimate in martial arts blah blah blah..." - Riker should already know it's the "Ultimate Whatever"; had he not spent most of his childhood getting his ass kicked by his cheating father in this retarded sport? Yeah, I know the "announcement" was breaking the fourth wall for the audience's benefit, never having seen it before, but generally speaking, bouncing around on trampolines with massive Q-tips made them look like rejects from American Gladiator. In all seriousness, most the first 2 seasons of TNG really should be decanonized. There are TAS episodes that were better written!

Oh come on, that's a massive over-reaction. There are some fantastic episodes in there; season 2 particularly is one of my all-time fave seasons. So much good stuff in there, and long before the show got complacent.

Well, to be fair, I did say most and not all. Perhaps I should focus my ire on Season 1 more specifically. S2 did have "Measure of a Man" and "Q Who", but also has the dubious honor of its finale, "Shades of Gray" being TNG's one and only clip show. Sorry, friend, but S2 was a real mixed bag.
