As parents we all think we know what's best, and try to protect our children from truly awful things.

My boy is almost 18, and he might slap me when I deliver the Caravan of Courage and Battle for Endor for his Younger half siblings viewing pleasure next week.

He can't enjoy it now, which is why I should have shown these muppet movies to him when he was 5, and if he can think that atemporally, then that means that this mostly grown up man can blame with for constructing an incomplete and deficient childhood for him.

I may have shown him the Christmas Special when he was 10, but I'm not completely positive.

I recommend you find a trained and sympathetic psychological counselor for you and your son to discuss this with, preferably one with ample cleavage.

Yes, over weight men do have more nurturing souls.

The Star Wars verse sometimes is just one of those things that does not age well from kid to adulthood, there are elements to the Star Wars universe that age well and are classic moments but overall I would say its too 80s and too dated. Toy Story, Donner Superman, Burton Batman, The Incredibles, Lion King, Coraline these will probably stand the test of time as classics....but there's something about Star Wars that doesn't work, maybe its the 80s humor, the haircuts, the dialogue, puppets like Yoda, or maybe the new scifi genre and modern CGI has left its FX look ordinary or maybe its the Ewoks. Personally I would not watch made-for-television films from Lucas ever again.

^Sounds like you're lumping together the original trilogy films...at least two of which stand the test of time extremely well IMO, and I'm sure I'm not alone...with the cheesy Ewok spinoffs, which aren't in the same league.

Barney Stinson from How I met Your Mother uses the Ewoks are awesome vs. Ewoks are stupid schism to figure out the terminal limit to the women he is picking up.

The Ewoks movies are cute. Though the first one feels like a nature documentary with the narration. I watch them every few years, which is more than I can say for Episode III.

I find it somewhat baffling to imagine that Star Wars is somehow more obviously '80s than the Donner Superman films.

Funny, I thought the first films in both franchises came out in the 70s....

Yeah, two of the Star Wars films were made in the 70s. No idea how anyone could claim the original trilogy is somehow 80s.

I find the Star Wars films still hold up provided you go in knowing you're watching what are essentially fairy tale films.

It's the fact that the protagonists are good guys.

That is so out of fashion right now.

As long as you don't tell him about the "Star Wars Christmas Special" (and "Life Day") -- you should be fine.;)

The Star Wars Holiday Special is like a geek rite of passage. Everyone thinks they want to see it, but they can't imagine how truly awful it is until they have. IMO, Lucas has been completely justified in keeping this from officially seeing the light of day for all these years.

If Lucas would just release the Boba Fett cartoon sequence somewhere people would stop asking for the whole thing. No-one really wants to see Mark Hamill made up like a girl.

Just hand him your DVD's (or Blue Rays, whatever you have), and let him watch them.

My guess is he'll either like them or hate them.

I don't. I don't have kids and my niece couldn't give a shit or several shits about Star Wars unfortunately.

My ten year old niece sits through hours of Star Wars Clone Wars gleefully every year.

Randy this isn't a now problem, this is a ten years ago problem.

I should have given him the Ewok movies ten years ago... Now it's just about contempt and apologies.
