Hmm... interesting to see that rule applied elsewhere. The rule is stupidly applied, though. It benefits the defense and not the offense when it's that far into the outfield.

This is real, by the way.

    It's been changed.

Well, no. That's the point. The reaction would be "of course they would do this, they're phillies fans." However, with the Braves, it's mixed with sympathy of their frustration from the call. That sympathy wouldn't be there.

Sports fans are sports fans. I expect Braves fans to do this because they care about their team. I wouldn't expect Marlins fans to do this, on the other hand, because they don't care. It's not about the city.

    Caretaker, good video :)

I saw it when it was first introduced, like 3 months ago. It was awesome.

This will be my last MLB talk for a while. The spot in the outfield where the infield fly rule was applied:

Did you see the video posted earlier? The infield fly rule was called at almost the exact same spot. The difference is that the infielder didn't panic at the last second and run away. Otherwise, it would have been a routine catch.

This was 50+ feet from that catch in the video according to Buster Olney at 225 feet. might as well just start sending infielders to catch everything in the outfield just in case. Not saying it would have decided the game, but it was just a poor call by a guy who had no business calling that.

Well, no, because they don't call it unless it could be caught with ordinary effort. That wasn't a difficult play. It's one infielders routinely make. He just screwed up and ran forward at the last second. That could have happened in the infield too (he could think another infielder will take it and move).

Thank you. I'm just glad there was someone who could put feelings aside and logically work out each step of what happened.

Honestly, it changed my mind. I was convinced it was the wrong call and it convinced me it was the right call.

There is an argument that the purpose of the rule isn't served by that play, but that doesn't mean it isn't often applied in that scenario. Baseball is a very legalistic sport so the official rule trumps its purpose.

A's with Walk off 15 to tie the series, Giants tie the series with a gutsy performance by Lincecum, and the Yankees with a Walk off. I love Playoff Baseball. :)

I want to be Raul Ibanez!! I don't care whether you love or hate or are indifferent to the New York Yankees, you can't deny what an incredible feat that was last night. He's 40 yrs old, called in to pinch hit for one of the all-time greats, hit a game-tieing HR in the bottom of the 9th while trailing 2-1. THEN hit the flippin' game WINning HR in the 12th!

I work in San Francisco, so everyone here had radios going and went nuts on that last out.

A ridiculous season by the A's, a historic come-from-behind for the division in the last days of the season culminating in that incredible sweep of the Rangers, the Giants sweeping the Reds at home to win the NLDS, and last night, the A's and Yankees both winning with dramatic walk-offs. My interest in baseball has been rekindled thanks to all this wonderful craziness! :D

And speaking of Oakland: while I'm glad the Giants won, my REAL interest is in the game that has yet to be played. Hope the A's can carry the momentum from that insane win last night through to tonight!
