I watched a few of the newer Science Fiction Television shows over the years like the new BattleStar Galactica, StarGate Universe, V, Lost, Knight Rider, Smallville, etc. I have to ask if now is a good time for Paramount to consider start putting together a new show based in the Star Trek universe.

Opinions of what the show will be about will be far and wide, I see there a a few threads started on that subject. I look at a more realistic point of view that the studio and network will go for new unknown actors. It is also unlikely there will continuation of a prior Star Trek show, like The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine. The money to bring back whole casts from those shows far exceeds any tv show produced today. It does not say you can bring back one or two characters as a regular, recurring, or a guest.

What Era and Where a series take place? We know this will have many opinions and could carry a thread on endlessly. My personal opinion is go just beyond "The Next Generation", 24th century era. This will leave an open door to bring in popular characters for a new Star Trek show. There is some material that can be recycled from the other shows that may interest viewers and create new original stuff. We can even see of the destruction of Vulcan and Romulus affected the TNG era. Tell us what happened after...

Should a new show be serialized, have all stand alone stories, or a mix? Doing a mix of story arcs with stand alone stories is probably what fans want to see. Star Trek has many great stand alone episodes from the five shows. I know DS9 & Enterprise did some good story arcs. Perhaps a mix of story arcs with standalone stories could work. Many are probably like me and think if a story arc goes too long, it becomes obvious the writers are dragging it out too long. I thought that was the case with the "Xindi" story arc on the 3rd season of Enterprise.

The last show "Star Trek Enterprise" was canceled because of low ratings. Many did not like the stories being presented or the fact the producers jumped to another era and abandoned the 24th century. Several of the big producers/writers left at the end of Deep Space Nine. Maybe the were too many "Prequels" tv shows and movies. Seems like after Star Wars did episode one, everything else went into prequel mode. Superman-"Smallville"; James Bond-"Casino Royale", etc... Probably over saturated the market with the same thing. The point is you cannot keep doing these re-imagined prequels, comes to a point you have to move forward.

What I want to see: totally serialized show either based in the 22nd C, with Birth of the Federation as the organizing principle (ie, ENT done right) or post-Dominion War, centered on Deep Space Nine, with some of the same characters and some new ones.

What would be best for the franchise: set in the 23rd C, following the semi-serialized adventures of a crew on a Starfleet vessel other than the Enterprise, with (rare) special guest cameos by the Trek XI stars, but with the appeal generated largely by the very appealling characters and their zany, touching, courageous, thought-provoking, and fun adventures.

Since "what I want to see" would get cancelled in a Scalosian minute, I'll go with "what would be best for the franchise."

I think the next series will be based in the JJ verse with Abrams serving as Executive Producer and maybe Orci and Kurtzman writing the pilot. I could foresee some of the "Lost" writers coming in to oversee the show. If not that then it could be a series that takes place in the future. Star Trek has always gone ahead (except for Enterprise of course which took a step back to look at the past). I'm thinking that the Paramount execs are still gauging what the status of the franchise is before they move along and return the franchise back to TV. It does seem weird to me not to have "Star Trek" on my television screen every week. I don't think it's been ignored, just continuously evaluated until they can come up with a plan for what to do.

I think the Paramount Execs probably will wait to see how the next Star Trek movie will do before making a decision to do a new Star Trek show. The only way it may happen sooner if the market for science fiction grows. I know awhile back on TrekToday, Orci and Kurtzman mentioned an ideal of doing a TOS era show on another Starship. That way they can do new original stuff without interfering with the movies taking place on the Enterprise.

I see there has been many references to Deep Space Nine specifically involving the aftermath of the Dominion War. I think you can do something with that, but you have to include everything else that happened after. Whats going on with the Borg after the future Janeway destroy the unicomplex? What would happen if the Hirogen reach the Alpha Quadrant? Whats going on with Q, Klingons, Feringi, etc.? Is there more races in the Gamma Quadrant that can present a problem to the Federation? There is room for new original material as well as recycling old material in a 24th century show.

I would like to something involving the Klingons myself to be a part of a new show. Do something clever and an ongoing story arc. The Klingon episodes from TNG and DS9 are very popular among the fans.

Please, no more Klingons. They are already so overused. Why not Romulans for a while? In any case, they should use an already existing alien race. What's the point in always creating a new alien race when an old one would suffice?

I'd like a very serialized show set on a space station. I'd like it to be serialized in the same way as the new BSG: several different simultaneous story arcs which evolve over time. The show would be set either, say, 40 years after Nemesis in the original timeline or sometime after the events in the new film in the new timeline.

I wouldn't mind seeing both Klingons and Romulans in the rebooted Trek verse as well as another ship. That was along what I was thinking about.

I'd like to learn more about Vulcans on the next show, but it would probably not be that exciting to the large mass.

The Klingon and Romulans have always been a vital part of the Star Trek universe and you cannot make a good Star Trek show without them. That is something that worked against Voyager. They had the Borg, but the producers purposely held off on bringing the Borg in until after "Star Trek First Contact". I am saying mix in a few Klingon episodes or mini-arc every season for the Klingon Fans. If we see a 23rd century era show, maybe we can see the Cardassians in that era also. Its been never established how the Cardassians were contacted, but Uhura in Star Trek XI ordered a "Cardassian Sunrise" establishing they exist in the Abrams rebooted version.

Personally I was against Paramount and Rick Berman doing "[Star Trek] Enterprise" and would have like to seen a post DS9/Voyager for series 5. They had all this back story built up and could have done a great serialized show. The question is can that be done for series 6 now. How many people be interested in watching it?

I think it would be great if there was a series that was post-nem. There are so many possibilities for a post-nem series.

I don't look forward to another Trek series. It's vastly more interesting right now to see the original Star Trek recreated for the first time in a context that makes real sense as an ongoing movie series, availing itself of all the virtues (and, alas, some shortcomings) of that form, as opposed to a TV-derived property.

I could see the next series being an animated show aimed at a younger demographic and set in its own continuity.

Yeah, animated actually is the only thing that makes sense.

It is likely Paramount will wait until the next Star Trek movie before deciding on a new TV series. That is unless a tv network wants to buy a Star Trek show to compete with other on-air sci-fi shows. There was concern about competing against the new Battlestar Galactica, but that has ran its course. It is likely Smallville will be ending after season 10 and would they would be looking for something big to replace it with. It is likely Paramount and the networks will go for something spun off of JJ Abrams Star Trek.

An Animated show is good, but what if it can be done along with a live action show.

The only way I can see a 24th century/TNG era show materializing if someone like Ronald D. Moore or Ira Steven Behr returning as the head producer of a Star Trek series. Maybe work together with JJ Abrams or the formal writers of lost.

The case for a new Star Trek series

interesting comments on it though nothing worth quoting.

I vote that this thread title gets changed. I thought there was actually some official news from CBS Television...

Paramount has nothing to do with a Star Trek TV series. The TV rights are owned by CBS which is a separate company from Paramount. Bad Robot has a TV production deal with Warner Brothers, so the odds of JJ and co. producing a TV show are even lower. You could MAYBE see a CBS/WB co-production airing on CW with Bad Robot involved. Beyond that any future Trek TV will have new creative people in charge of the show.

One question: While Voyager was in the Delta Quadrant, who was working in the Night shifts? Appart from Harry. I'd like to see a comedy-type thing with some of the worst crewmen put on during the nightshift...

Nah, we need another series. Pronto.

I forgot that CBS has the television rights...so then (forgive me if I'm wrong in assuming this) that CBS can go ahead and develop whatever Star Trek series they want while the film franchise is still owned and under the development of Paramount Pictures?

That's correct. But, unfortunately, that's not going to happen anytime soon, because presently CBS deems Star Trek as cost-prohibitive and not a part of their overall vision for the network. (And believe me, you wouldn't want ST done on the cheap anyway).

Now, with that said, I do think the success of the movie could only help CBS see televised Trek as viable, but that's just my opinion because I'm not a network executive.
