Thanks. I don't have any experience with Photoshop and I haven't gotten around to learning any 3D programs yet, so all I could do was cut and paste parts of different guns together in MSPaint to give a general idea of what I'm going for.

And speaking of MSPaint, here is a custom Enterprise design I did a while back.

    Here's another version:

And here is a Kelvin-inspired one I'm working on:

Thanks! So far I think the Kelvin inspired one might end up being my favorite. Once I get around to familiarizing myself with Blender I do it up in 3D.

    Hi all,

I think this is my first visit to this section of the BBS. I'm participating in an art challenge on Facebook this year, the "52-Week Illustration Challenge". For this week's theme, "Book Cover", I finally put a design on paper that has been in my head for decades. I have tried (and also not-yet tried) to commission same from several professional artists I know. You know, "One day, when you're not too busy..." I was willing to pay $$$$ to get someone to create a cover for me, to my exacting specifications, that would be a homage to several genres - and Bob Peak's poster art for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" - and/or might have been great for a website front page, or even a "Best of..." collection of my writing over several decades in fandom.

"Have Phaser, Will Travel" was the name of a regular column I wrote bimonthly for a science fiction media newsletter (1982-1992), and then the name of my first blog, at http://therinofandor.blogspot.com.au/

This Challenge has inspired me to say, instead, in the words of the Little Red Hen, "I'll do it all by myself!" (Who knows, maybe it's an eBook cover for an actual digital collection?)

This is an iPhone photograph of a white styrofoam ball, painted with a few slaps of acrylic paint and mounted on a wire skewer in a glass. I created some rings for the big planet by hot-laminating circles of yellow paper and gluing on some glitter.

I actually used some black cloth draping (ie. a pair of black boxer shorts and the top and bottom of my long thermal underwear), and three sizes of star-shaped glitter tossed randomly. Light sources via a torch (wedged into the toilet roll holder), and the light-up model of the USS Enterprise ("Star Trek"). Smaller moons are represented by a bouncy ball, a ping pong ball and a foam clown nose. This image again took me about 15 minutes to assemble and photograph with my iPhone.

So, I decided to take another run at the monthly art contest on ImagineFX.com. The theme for April was "Fairytale," for which I chose to do a sci-fi interpretation of "Sleeping Beauty."

Votes are neck-and-neck between me and one other person but I should know by Wednesday who the winner is.

Ironically, the dragon ship was the first thing I thought of for this piece but the second-to-last thing I actually painted. The last thing was the helmet at the bottom of the steps. ;)

That dragon ship looks like it would be at home being helmed by a Klingon.

what prince charming didn't know was that the princess had pricked her finger upon a nanomachine spindle. once he'd opened the isolation vessel, assimilation took only seconds.

Results were just announced in the last 15 minutes or so. I did, indeed, win by a squeaker. Really high caliber of entries this month. I'm pleased, though; that's four wins for me out of five entries. :techman:
