    Hi

I have a first generation iPad.

The computer that it is connected to via iTunes was recently infected with a virus.

My computer guy may be able to save the music files. He may be able to install a new OS on that computer.

However, I'm not sure how this would help me in terms of syncing my iPad again. I don't want to lose everything that's on my iPad now simply because Apple is stingy about such things.

    Thanks!

You should be able to re-download everything as long as you have your account information. Me and my wife have had the same account for several years through multiple computers.

Are the music files currently on your iPad at all?

    yes

But I have a feeling that if I sync it with another computer even with my own iTunes account, I'll lose any songs I didn't buy from iTunes, which is almost all of them

That has never been a problem for me. I have plenty of songs on iTunes that I acquired elsewhere.
