Well, some people aren't interested in hearing it anyway.

Unscientific theater report: Saw STID today, liked it a good deal more on the second go around. Still have quibbles, but I was in better spirits leaving.

That said, I was 1 of 20 people in the theatre. Out of the crowd, I was the youngest outside a 9 year old girl. Considering I sit just outside of the demographics, it was interesting to see. All mid-day to early evening performances of Fast & Furious 6 were sold out. Didn't get a sense of Hangover's theatre traffic, but there were a lot of people there. I'll be curious to see Friday's numbers.

Variety is saying anywhere from $35-45 million for F&F 6 on Friday. No early estimate for STiD yet.

In the future just point to Superman Returns when others claim it just needs to make as much as its budget to get a sequel. Superman Returns had $270 million budget, made $391 worldwide. Never got a sequel.

Yeah, although the $270 million is inflated with the costs of the previous cancelled Superman projects. Then there's John Carter, which did $282.7 million on a $250 million production budget - a disaster that Disney lost a lot of money on, which is a pity because I personally enjoyed it and would have liked to see a sequel.

That would be a useful tip, of course, if anyone "claimed" that.

Some people think all of the box office goes to the studio, though. That's the broader point Dream was referencing.

People need to stop talking about this movie making back its back its budget as if it actually means anything. It needs quite a bit more for a sequel.

It is a good sign though that the film has made its budget in a week-and-a-half of release. Unless the wheels just totally come off, it should have enough legs to guarantee a sequel.

It'll make enough to get a sequel, albeit perhaps one with a reduced budget. It's still an open question to what extent Paramount will be happy or at least somewhat disappointed with the final gross.

    It means a lot. Relax.

There will be another Bad Robot Star Trek movie in 2016.

Paramount isn't releasing any Thursday actuals today for some reason. The Thursday estimate is $5,054,000. We'll only get the actual following the long weekend.

...awkward timing. I huzzah'd the film making back its budget already, not... Paramount's quietness.

Even if they aren't releasing actuals, we will still keep getting estimates over the next few days from the usual sources.

And people can make wild comparisons to unrelated films from years ago as if they knew more than just to repost numbers they read on other websites.

As for Superman Returns: a good movie that for whatever reason didn't really click with the audiences, and we all know it killed the Superman film-franchise.
    Oh, wait.

Of course. But it ratchets up anxiety over a needless concern.

It was just an illustration that all of the box office doesn't go to the studio. No more than that.

It certainly derailed the Superman franchise for a while, with a reboot being made some years later rather than a direct sequel. As I've said any number of times, though, I expect Trek to get another direct sequel in 2016.
