I forgot to mention that the family scene at the end with Beckett was fun. I always get a kick whenever Kate goes over to Castle's place.

Just a really fun episode tonight. It is interesting to see Alexis "rebel" this season and not act like her usual self. The party was amusing but felt kind of pointless. It does seem like they're being hard pressed to find an excuse to include Alexis in episodes now which is too bad. I am liking Captain Gates. We finally get to see her do some police work and interact with Beckett without being an ass.

Not the best one.. i'm no big fan of crime shows in general (tend to find them very boring) so i was a late comer to Castle (started midway season 3) and i tend to tune out the scenes dealing purely with the case so i almost tuned out half or more of this episode.

It was an ok episode but it lacked Caskett moments (not that it solely makes the show but it has become a big part of it), other really funny stuff (with few exceptions this time) or much character progress.

However i liked Penny Jerald (our very own Cassidy Yates.. yay! :techman:) in this one because she got much more to do that do a few lines here and there and disapprove of Castle. She really is a capable cop, she runs a tight ship and even she has picked up on Castle & Beckett so much she was forced to act on it

Not every episode has to (or can) knock it out of the park.. decent crime episode but not much more. Next week Castle sits one out but the following two episodes are promised to be BIG (the second episode called Cuffed has both of them cuffed together and during filming there was a closed set for some scenes promising some awesome developments!) and i can't wait! :techman:

I wouldn't necessarily say that it lacked Caskett moments...Gates seems to be very aware of the two of them's dependency on one another and separated them. To me this is a direct response to Caskett and it was done in a pretty fun way. We got to see Kate act like a detective without relying on Castle while still promoting Castle's case while Gates assessed her abilities while taking part in the investigation herself. Plus I dug the line "without distractions" an obvious reference to Caskett in my opinion.

Not to mention "Killshot" in two weeks looks to be a heavy focus on Caskett given the plot synopsis and the promo for it as well. Wow. Yeah "Killshot" looks to be a arc heavy episode and the Nov sweeps episode considering we have to wait two weeks for it. It is going to be awesome!

Can we please not call them "Caskett?" Those shippy portmanteaus are annoying enough as a rule, but that one's downright morbid.

I didn't care for this one. The idea of mixing up the characters into different groupings was a nice one, but the execution was too silly and corny. The detectives dressing up as Elvis impersonators to get into the casino? Really? Couldn't they have just liaised with the Atlantic City police and let the local detectives go in and ask the questions? And Fillion looked really bad in his Elvis disguise. Is he putting on weight? He seemed huge.

And the "teen party gets out of control" trope is extremely cliched and predictable, and I thought Alexis was out of character at the end. She wouldn't lie to her father about it, she'd admit her mistake and take full responsibility. I miss the Alexis of the first three seasons, the one who was the most levelheaded and responsible member of the family. She seems to have been replaced by a far more stereotypical moody, erratic teenager.

Also, having the captain directly work with Beckett in the investigation on their end was contrived. Surely there are other detectives in the precinct that Beckett could've teamed with. And if there were so many crimes under investigation that none of them could be spared, then surely the captain would be too busy overseeing all of them to devote herself to just one. At least they made a token effort to justify it by having her say she liked to visit the trenches now and then. But it still felt awkward.

Again...Christopher as pointed out before Alexis "acting out" is precisely what she is doing because for really the first time she is dealing with things she has never had to before. I don't think she really knows how to deal with them. Alexis has spent most of her life trying to be the perfect smart daughter. Now she is suddenly faced with things she can't control or deal with and is dealing with them in the manner that she has this season. Alexis has no focus. The rejection letter has probably affected her more than she has let on.

As for referring to Kate and Rick's relationship as "Caskett"...what's the harm in that? Refer to them as you will and I'll stick with Caskett :)

Finally Captain Gates had a very specific reason for working directly with Kate, she told her so herself. She wanted to see how Kate worked alone...without Castle or Ryan and Esposito. While a contrived plot device it still paid off in my opinion and it was an excuse to have her in the episode. So far they've used Penny pretty sporadically.

How about we call them "Castle and Beckett" like civilized people do?

I repeat my earlier question and follow it up with, "Why do you hate fun?"

Everytime we have fun, a kitten dies :(

The writers of Castle have made it clear since day one that silly & corny is part of the parcel.

It is much more fun to ridicule and scorn silly shipper portmanteau labels than it is to employ them in earnest.

People having a little fun is not the problem and I very much doubt people on here are going to use Caskett or anything else on a regular basis, it was a bit of humor that us uncivilized people engage in from time to time.

    I said out, dammit!
Oh lord YES, please!!! I for one (two, I guess) am sick to death of those stupid words. Which I now know the word for. :)

    Yep, agreement all 'round.
We knew the party was going to get out of hand when Castle made the John Hughes crack!

I thought this week's was just a bit dull. Kept losing interest. But then, that's a bit of a chicken-and-egg thing; was I distracted because the episode was boring, or was I bored with it because I was distracted?

Yea it was somewhat... one of the best parts was Castle and the cops dressed up as Elvises :guffaw:. Just priceless.

The chief of police (iirc) just got on my nerves somewhat though. She seriously has a bug up her butt about Castle and Beckett. Glad she was brought down to earth a little bit by having to work :techman:.

Me neither. She needs to go away :p. As in off to a far off corner of the precinct... that would be really nice ;).

What don't you like about her?

The writers have intentionally written her as a little bit unlikeable because they wanted a change after Montgomery.

Montgomery was more like a father figure in the precinct.. the wise old guy who gives advice but still has the reigns in hand. The reason why he kept Castle around was that he saw how good he was for Kate and i believe in the later seasons when people began picking up signals that there was something developing between them he encouraged it because "before Castle Beckett didn't have fun".

Gates is the polar opposite and it's just a different management style. She is career oriented and that means she wants results from her people and this is why she's driving them harder than necessary at times because she wants her precinct to have as good a record as it can be. Castle is a loose cannon.. he could fire any way and that makes him unpredictable and that's something Gates apparently doesn't like and only by mayor intervention was she forced to endure him. However i see her (very) slowly warming up to the fact that Castle can contribute which was very evident in this episode when she indirectly admitted that the Beckett/Castle team works very well. However even she has realized that there's more between them than just partners and that brought a smile to my face (and she said it with the same smile she so often displayed on DS9 :)).
