Seriously, DO NOT READ this unless you a) have read Typhon Pact: Raise The Dawn, or b) just don't give a crap.

(and forgive me if this has been done already in another thread!)

I'd like to kick off an unofficial art challenge for:

The new Deep Space Nine station created after the destruction of the old DS9 in Raise the Dawn.

Come on, you art people - show us what you can come up with!

I'ma kick this off by posting mine! I originally put this in the Trek Lit forum, but there didn't seem to be much interest in an art contest there.

You have to click the post spoiler smiley and type in a title for the spoiler to get the code.

The very nature of this thread kinda kills the usefulness of any spoiler code. At least the thread title has "SPOILERS" in it, so if you don't want to see spoilers for Raise the Dawn, you shouldn't come in here!

As for your contribution, Mojomoe, it does look cool. I imagine that the shape of the station and its features is more an aesthetic choice to echo the original rather than functional. After all, I doubt this thing has anything to do with mining. Not sure what the gigantic glowy bits are for, though.

I don't have it in front of me, but the description in the books does mention the idea of the circles like that, so it does have some similarity to the short description as well :)

I hated the cover of the book showing the new DS9 being that ugly station from the SOTL calander.

I think this would make a great DS9 station.

To be fair, that's stated by the authors in the know to be the station FOR the station.

i.e., that hideous blemish on the cover is the construction yard, not the new station, which has yet to be designed.

I'd love to have specs on the "construction shacks", though.

It says Spoilers right in the thread title. Why would things need spoiler code inside of it? If you don't want spoilers the thread title should've been enough to deter you.

I've read the books, I wasn't complaining for my sakes. I just think that it would be a decent thing to do.

The thread title should have said "Open Spoilers", not to get nitpicky.

Okay, I have to confess I'm tempted to take a crack at this, though probably no more than a rough sketch or two. Unfortunately, I haven't read the novels in question or any other Trek novels in several years. Anybody care to repost any relevant descriptive information about what the new station is supposed to look like? Also, who is actually building it? The Federation? The Bajorans? I assume not the Cardassians.

I'm wondering myself if the new DS9 novel coming out next year will even feature the new station on the cover or what. I'm curious as to what the station looks like too. Maybe like the one seen in Earth orbit in the recent TNG Hive mini series.

    Sure thing, Vektor!

This is the description from Raise The Dawn

Despite the radical design, it shared many characteristics with other Starfleet facilities: the gray-white surface of its hull, the curves and proportions of its components, the familiar lettering along one arc that read UNITED FEDERATION OF PLANETS. The overall, esentially spherical shape of the station, though, reminded Ro of it's predecessor. The new facility would ultimately comprise three rings, oriented at right angles to one another. They would all surround an inner sphere, connecting to it via a half-dozen crossover bridges. The rings would provide docking and cargo services, while the sphere would house work, commercial and residential sections.

Hmm... that description really doesn't fit with what I had in mind. I might go ahead and throw something together anyway, just for fun.

Exactly, that's what I thought as well. The actual description sounds like someone describing something without visualizing it first. "It's got a lot of lines. People like lines? Ok, good. It'll have... fifteen converging lines. That sounds like it'll look good."

I basically ignored the guidelines as well... that central sphere really bugs me.

Also bear in mind that the design was overseen by Miles O'Brien, so I took the angle that the Chief basically redesigned DS9 after years of dealing with faulty systems and architecture, so he likely fixed a lot of things only9 he'd be familiar with.

Mostly, I just wanted something that wouldn't look like... a sphere with a bunch of gray rings wrapped around it.
