Only if they have Michael Cera, and Jonah Hill as well.

    I'm joking.

I think Ghostbusters is a fantastic movie. While the sequel was not awful, I found it to be several notches below the first. The first was completely fresh, and the second was in many ways a retread.

I hope they can make a new film that feels as fresh as the first one, and that's not just a by-the-numbers rehash.

Isn't this all on hold because they are waiting for Murray to read the script?

Passing torch movie isn't the movie I wanted but it's the best we're gonna get at this late stage.

At this point, I'd rather just see a remake or a "loose sequel" that acknowledges the first but now exists in a world where GB is a multinational corporation and the original guys are all retired. Don't even bother with the "passing the torch." Just mention that Venkman is a happily retired guy living on a yacht with Dana and Oscar

    On a lighter note, perhaps.

Today I'm going to take a crack at making some Slimer Ecto Cooler!

And have Jesse Eisenberg and Michael Cera play brothers?

That actually might be for the best, actually. They could make cameos, but maybe the movie could be set a few decades after the second, where things have changed a lot since. I wouldn't make it a corporation, but maybe it's evolved into a government operation to track down spooks? After the last two movies, maybe the mayor of New York has finally had to admit that they're needed and from there has evolved to being federal. So, the next movie could deal with a worldwide epedemic instead of being focused sorely in NY.

That's an awesome story. Now, I'll always remember that story when I think of Ghostbusters 3.

There's a LOT of argument in that.

You could make a better argument for J.J.'s Star Trek.

Of course it's all a matter of opinion because I think the reverse is true.

I thought "Tron Legacy" did a pretty good job of passing the torch actually, were there flaws in the story? Yes. That's part of the problem of what people have been talking about. These types of movies generally don't work out, because there is so much going on in them that a script can become sloppy.

As for cast members, I really like Ackroyd's suggestion a few months ago about Alssya Milano and Eliza Dusku. I think there was a picture of Eliza in a GB uniform with a proton pack on twitter or something. There were rumors of Seth Rogen playing a grown up Oscar late last year, early this year that were never confirmed for denied. Steve Carrell's name has been mentioned a few times (which I love). Here are my suggestions:

Steve Carrell as the new Egon character
Eliza Dushku as the female character/potential love interest
Michael Cera as the new Peter character
Mos as the new Winston character

Maybe you toss in a couple of new secondary characters that are friends of these guys.

i also agree that Tron Legacy passed it well....It's a lot more logical how the son is able to navigate the virtual world, and sets it up just fine for a sequel.

    For additions:

I think Ken Leung could do a a great Venkman-type of leader

Steve Yeun could be great as the technical genius who is still darned scared of ghosts.

An old article from March that agrees with your post. Possibly another reason "3" hasn't been made yet:

I am seriously doubting we will see this get made.
WE have been hearing that for these many years, haven't we? :scream:

Looks like the project is back in development hell (or more than likely dead). I don't really want to see a Ghostbusters III without Bill Murray. Ah hell...I'm a little wishy washy on the subject :)

Re: Aykroyd Comments on Murray, Ghostbusters 3! Working on Script w/Ra

I'm not sure I'd care that much if Murray wasn't involved. I may have been the only GB fan(atic) that really liked the idea of the rumors of him being a ghost. However, I do think without Murray Sony may ultimately decide on a reboot and not a continuation. And that would be hella bad for Dan, who I believe has his heart in the right place about what the fans want/need from the next film.

I also hope he's not recast. Stick him and Dana offscreen in retirement somewhere... I don't even think it's a stretch for the character.

Whatever happens, I have the Ghostbusters Video Game (2009) on my shelf to the right of GB1+2 because really... that was solid enough to be the third film. And depending on who you talk to the general idea of the story (Ghostbusters: Hellbent) seems pretty close to what the game ended up being. The idea that Hell was starting to creep into real-world NYC and that the busters fight The Devil or some sort of demon in the end. There are cringe bits of dialog in there but for the most part it makes an awesome CGI sequel to GB1+2 as well as ties threads of both films together in a way I never thought possible.

Any future GB film will be #4 for me. :)

Haha wow, yeah, why am I not surprised? This thing has been in development hell for so long that it's best to take any news of it moving forward with a grain of salt.

And yeah, I have the game too and it was quite decent. I do hope they make a sequel to that and expand upon the gameplay a bit. It was quite satisfying, but I kind of wished it were more open-ended. I'd love for them to make an open-ended game where you drive the Ecto-1 throughout NYC. Sort of like a supernatural GTA.

I wish Ghost Busters 2 had been lost in development hell.

In the show teachers, 3rd season, they lost their strongest cast members for no real reason. They didn't say a thing in the first episode, but by episode 2 we find out that there's been a car crash and the remaining cast is taking turns pissing on their friends graves becuase they'd been right assholes near the end.

    With that in mind...

Ray and Dana are doing it throughout the opening credits on Top of Venkman's grave.

    They finish.

    Rise.

    Shake hands.

    "Same time next year?"

    "Why not?"

They turn their backs to one another and walk off in seperate directions.

To quote the Video Blogger host of "Shameful Sequels" in his review to "Garfield 2" (paraphrased): "Bill Murray refuses to do Ghostbusters 3 but he says yes to this shit?"
