How about an option to automatically raise shields when incoming weapons fire is detected?

Ensign Redshirt: "Sir, the enemy ship is firing on us!"
    Captain Whoever: "Raise sh--"
    *KABOOM*
Ensign Redshirt: "Oops, too late. We suck."

If you're determined to put the bridge on the top of the primary hull. Then don't give it a BIG FRAKKING WINDOW! What happened to the Vengeance's bridge window? It broke.

Or just leave the shields up ALL THE TIME. The only time they really need to be lowered is for transporting or shuttle launches.

They actually have this already, they just don't always use it for some reason. There's plenty of instances where the ship (both TOS and TNG) raises shields by itself just because something seems weird or potentially hazardous, like a possible cloaked ship or incoming energy wave.

General Order 12: On the approach of any vessel, when communications have not been established ...

Unfortunatly we never got to hear the rest of it, but given the context in which Saavik mentioned the regulation it would imply something along the lines of raising shields or at least going to Yellow Alert or the ship is take a defensive posture.

Kirk did order yellow alert moments later, so your assessment may be correct.

That's why the proper universe relied on sensor and holographic technology to generate a visual representation without actually having a flimsy window on the Bridge.

The 'Proper universe' didn't use flimsy windows?

This is now scraping the bottom of the canon barrel.

Not on the Goddamn bridge they didn't! (Excepting the TOS and TNG ceiling domes or DS9 Ops of course)

    Picard: "We surrender."

There was a window to space dome above the bridge on the Enterprise in the first pilot, and later above Picard's bridge. Obviously the dome on the Enterprise Dee was capable of breaking with enough shock and twisting force.

There's no evidense that the TOS (as in "series") Enterprse possessed such a feature. Nor the Voyager, or the NX-01.

I immediately thought of a long retractable pole and the impracticality of such a device, but then... all they need is a flexible tether, like what they showed on the NX-01 before going to tractor beams. At the end would be the emitter/receiver. The beam patterns would easily move through the electrical conduit, transferred directly to the most convenient local transporter room.

Yes, the exploding consoles... ENOUGH ALREADY. It is dramatic, yes, but stupid beyond all belief. I don't mind high voltage junction boxes nearby exploding, but consoles at manned stations? It's pathetic.

I agree. While the helmets were a tad extreme, I think they had the right idea, especially how it was revisited with the Macos in ENT. I'd like to see some flak armor too.

In addition to seat restraints, have some standing support restraints available as well, like a waist level support that extends from the walls, so a standing person could lash themselves to one when the ship goes into battle or starts to hit turbulence.

And yeah... one BIG OLD FASHIONED PHYSICAL LEVER for the holodeck, that when pulled cuts all power to the damned thing!

Didn't help them in Nemesis or Year of Hell. And we saw the flimsy glass dome on the TNG bridge broken in Generations.

The one time we see the stupid dome window in GEN and it's made of thin candy glass. When I saw the huge vertical "plaza" in STID. I thought the bridge could pull a stunt like what was done in "StarGate: Universe". During non-alert situations, the bridge is exposed at the top of the hull with a huge viewing window. In battle situations, the entire bridge retracts backwards and down into the plaza for protection. It could retract all of the way down to the center of the primary hull. Man, that would have looked silly.

Well the windows breaking in Generations was silly at best. Someone just had a brain fart of "oh they're crashing let's have the windows break" even though Data previously confirmed they're transparent aluminum one episode, and if they have a breaking point lower than the rest of the hull it defeats the purpose of them at all. By the logic of them breaking when they crash into the surface, every time an enemy torpedo hit them they should've broken.

Really beyond aesthetic reasoning, there's ZERO reason to put the bridge anywhere near the exterior of the ship. It should've been in the heart of the vessel like the battle bridge on the E-D.

In ST:FC, the viewscreen of the Ent-E was not always active; it was a featureless wall until specifically called upon, at which point it showed an image, then turned off again when not in use.

    That's a good idea, IMHO.

Taking those in reverse order. The battle bridge is located on the top deck of the dorsal neck, so when the saucer seperates from the neck/engineering section, the battle bridge is completely exposed.

As to why the bridge wouldn't be buried as deeply as possible with in the ship? The best reason I could think of would be that our brave officers lead from the front, and they don't cower down inside a "bunker" somewhere. In a combat situation the entire crew is potentially at risk, having the top officers receive special protection could be poor for morale.

There is also a question as to whether the bridge would be better protected elsewhere. A starship's true armor resides in it's shields, not it's hull. Hitting the bridge if located on deck ten, might be no more difficult than if it remained on deck one.

    :)

Exactly. It's not the job of the hull to protect the bridge; that's what shields are for. Any attack powerful enough to punch through shields will hit the bridge no matter where it is.

And having the bridge at an easily accessible location would make it easier to replace or repair (all bridges are replaceable modules).
