Happy 5000000, Trek-BBSers! Bloody typical, innit, just as everything happens I'm in a cab, on a bus, in a train, or out with the dogs
[Australis]^The little word "or" I put in there, once, should -what's this sort of grammatical thing called?- be read for every comma! afaik.
I got it. Although, as I feared, connection screwed up, had to reboot, and lost about 20 minutes immediately afterward. Here it is, reduced in size, but still like 1080 wide when reduced almost by half. I'll make an exception for the special occasion.
Awesome. Well done. Noticed the different adds you have on your screen compared to mine. Are they country specific? I have Kmart toy sale banner and Panasonic bluray adds along the side
^ They're region specific. I'm in Arizona, and frequently get local ads for car dealers and other businesses, as well as national ads. The JFK ad didn't start showing up until 31 Oct, when I looked at a thread about Roddenberry's idea of Spock being the man on the grassy knoll in Dallas.
I matched my usual zero numbers on powerball tonite, but at least I have this. Not much consolation to my wife (not that she'll ever know).
We did it, guys. This will be an evening long remembered. Or at least we'll remember it until the 6,000,000th Post thread is started. I predict it will have something to do with J.J. Abrams being a monster or one of us showing off a brand new hat. And knowing this board, it'll probably combine both.
No intense of slighting Bloody Green Shirt's victory (congratulations!! ) : if you just go by the post number in the database, #5,000,000 was already made in 2011: http://www.trekbbs.com/showpost.php?p=5000000 by Gaith. #6,000,000 can't be found #7,000,000 was made more than a year ago by Ar-Pharazon: http://www.trekbbs.com/showpost.php?p=7000000 At the moment (10:27 CET) the newest post bears the number 8,844,178 http://www.trekbbs.com/showpost.php?p=8844178 BJ's observation about the board only counting every third post is indeed correct. Pretty crazy - usually, a database is supposed to count every post. Maybe it's a safeguard in case 2 posters happen to post at exactly the same moment? Or the board counts the ads as well - that'd explain the 2:1 ratio
Could it simply not count threads that have fallen out of their respective forums? 6,000,000 could have been a spambot/n00b linking to an illegal download of a movie. Which would of course mean those deleted threads do take the post counts with them when they die.
Hmm, deleted posts. That would indeed be a possibility. Yet a loss of about 30% of posts sounds a bit much for spam. But wasn't there a big pruning some 8 or 9 years ago? I recall that around that time I had an account I hadn't used in years and received a message that inactive accounts would get deleted. If that pruning included the posts, that would account for the figures. And wasn't there a server crash a while later as well?? We ought to ask Anthony instead of wildly speculating - but on the other hand speculating can be such a lot of fun! How about trying to find the craziest theory? I propose that a rift in the time-space continuum caused by Cpt Kirk not sticking to the intergalactic speed limit opened and swallowed those missing 3.8 million posts.
