I never went in the store since I didn't want TO BUY ANYTHING. I flew all the way there, saw all the cool stuff in the museum, lots of other stuff in DC, but I missed the motherfucking Enterprise since I didn't feel like getting a damn tin space shuttle?! SERRRIOOUSSSLLLYYYYY!!!!! Sigh. At least I saw the space shuttle Enterprise in NY.
I for got to ask you Tom, did you bring your kids? If so, how did they like it. My daughter is going to be 4 in a few weeks so I'm just wondering how interesting she's find it.
The model isn't structurally sound enough anymore to be suspended or hung. As the Smithsonian rotates exhibits semi-frequently, and it themes its placements (you aren't going to see stuff about the Mars Rover alongside '50s airplanes or whatever), there wasn't really a way to give the Enterprise a permanent home. However, as part of the renovations of the museum a while back, a new three-story gift shop was installed, and so the Enterprise was placed in the lower level -- you can get close to it and examine it in detail, but it's on a stand so the model doesn't suffer any further structural degradation. It's not the most optimal solution, but it makes sense.

Yes, we have the kids with us and they loved it, the model is surrounded by Star Wars & Star Trek stuff, plus other space related items. My sons love, love anything to do with Space. If you ask my oldest what he wants to be when he grows up, the answer is always an Astronaut. Here are a few shots,

Damn yeah, I've been to that place as well and did not see the Enterprise Oh well, it's a fine museum anyway.
There was a time when the Museum was talking about putting the Enterprise into storage and out of public view, so while the store area isn't the most ideal display location at least they decided to leave the model out in the open. That's more than a fair compromise and I don't have a problem with it.
