The character from the episode was a Yeoman named Zahra. And this character was named Zahra, so she's likely a Yeoman. After all, so far everyone in the comics has essentially the same job on the Enterprise as their Prime Universe counterpart.
is it me or are they looking more and more like the prime characters in each new book. I am so looking forward to first collection to this series. Hardback star trek comics. yes!!!
I remember her - she was really foxy wasn't she? Since they replaced Mears with Rand (albeit that Rand was in the original script) I was just wondering if Rand might more regularly adopt the yeoman role and that they might have updated the Zahra character to a less servile, more modern role instead. La plus ca change... I hope they don't follow the casting of TOS too slavishly or we'll see Kirk, Spock, McCoy landing parties despite the logic of using other crew, Uhura will spend almost all her time at her post, and we'll never see any of the groovy aliens that we saw in TMP despite seeing some in the background of the new movie. As an aside, if we're gong to have a medical emergency in this story, what are the odds of seeing Chapel and will her image be based on an actress who has been cast in the new move?
Communicator insignia? by Therin of Andor, on Flickr #7 and 8, yes. In Star Trek #7, "The adventures of the new crew of the Enterprise continue in this all new two-part story that takes place soon after the events of the last film! While Vulcans struggle to survive in the wake of their homeworld's destruction at the hands of rogue Romulans, and some Vulcans believe that the logical response can be summed up in one word: revenge! STAR TREK writer/producer Roberto Orci oversees this original story set in the timeline leading up to the blockbuster film sequel!" http://www.tfaw.com/Profile/Star-Trek-Ongoing-7___399587 "In Star Trek #8, Kirk and crew must “race against time to thwart a renegade Vulcan plot to destroy Romulus.” Sarek of Vulcan, Spock’s father, will make a guest star appearance...". Written by Mike Johnson, Star Trek #8 will feature art by Joe Phillips, with a cover by Tim Bradstreet: http://www.trektoday.com/content/2012/01/star-trek-ongoing-comic-8/
Perhaps they'll use the original stories to develop some of the other characters, and deal with more of the elements of the movie.
Well, having now read the story, Zahra certainly looks and acts like a security guard - I'm happy with that adjustment. The beeping badge - meh - I'm quite hapy with flip-top comms, albeit it's silly in the light of modern tech if they don't have visual capabilities. Overall, this is the first story where the diversion from the original seems to be substantial, although the focus is still very much on Kirk and Spock. I'm not even convinced that there is going to be a big medical scene on the ship at this stage so Chapel's name check may be all we get. At the moment, the original re-tellings have been too brief to big up any supporting cast without altering the emphasis away from Kirk and Spock in a significant way. I would certainly like to see original stories where the focus isn't the Big 3, perhaps re-telling an episode from the pov of one of the minor characters, like in Lower Decks, might be interesting? I would really like them to expand the cast to feature more aliens - Keenser's cameo in the first issue wasn't all that inspiring. If they aren't prepared to add some aliens in the re-tellings, maybe original stories could take up that mantle too. I'd also like them to make use of characters who made only brief appearances in TOS. Riley is always one of the most fun examples but I loved the prickly but smart Ann Mulhall - surely the ship's astrobiologist should have featured in a lot more episodes than she did (ok Mulhall was new in season 3 but no reason why she can't be around earlier in this timeline or even a new, alien astrobiologist). We know of 2 other doctors on board (Noel and M'Benga) so why doesn't McCoy give them a name check instead of Chapel since one of them should be in charge of sick bay when he's off the ship and why not introduce an alien doctor with a medical specialism in xenobiology to make up for TOS humancentric medical team? The comic has a lot of potential to expand and they are starting to make bigger adjustments. Lets hope they take the comic to some new and very exciting places!
^Mulhall was from a season 2 episode. And Dr. Noel was a psychiatric doctor, not an MD, so I don't think she'd be in charge of sickbay.
Perhaps they want to hold off on actually showing Chapel in case she's in the next movie? Just a random theory, I have no idea if anything like that is happening.
Thanks for the clarification, I always think that Miranda Jones was season 2 and I know they were separate seasons. But what a bargain, even if they stuck with the original timeline, she could be around a lot sooner. They might adjust the story so that the android bodies are completed and/or so that the bodies of some guest crew (perhaps including Mulhall) are stolen to become recurring villains. Maybe they could become additions to Khan's motley crew of augments, orion pirates, and klingon mercenaries! Noel was a psychiatrist I think, which means she is an MD who specialises in pychiatric illness and therefore probably not qualified to be a surgeon (albeit qualified to try and diagnose Gary Mitchel). On a small ship that still makes her more qualified to supervise sick bay while a CMO is off ship than a nurse. M'Benga was a surgeon though - they could always cast him as the xenobiology doc I suppose. I suspect that they held off featuring Chapel until an actress was cast so they could draw her likeness. Not sure when the comic was drawn in relation to the movie but I certainly hope that they are going to give Chapel in few lines in this one. If Chapel looks like Majel in the comic, this could be an indication that she isn't going to feature.
A comic coming out now would probably have had the art done a couple of months ago. And shooting just began a week or so ago, so casting was probably concluded fairly recently -- indeed, casting for some smaller roles might not even have been completed yet, depending on when their scenes are shot. I'd say it's too early to expect likenesses of new cast members.
Yes I think that is probably correct. Although they may use a vague likeness with a distinctive hairdo that they can plop on any old actress. Rand for example may not be in the next movie but there was at least one blonde crewman with the same hairdo in the last movie.
nice new avatar by the way. when do you think they will ask you or some of the writers to be writers for the comic seris?
The novel authors are supposedly welcome to pitch, and some have been successful (eg. KRAD, PAD, Ian Edginton. Bob Greenberger had a story accepted but it was cancelled), but IDW also have their own stable of dependable freelancers(?), so it can be tricky to break in, as in all other areas of publishing. Andy Mangels has said he's made numerous approaches, to several past IDW editors, with ST stories and can't crack it for a gig.
haven't seen anything yet, the previews usually show up within the week before publication, so we have a couple of days to wait
