What other reason does Hollywood need? Can you imagine if LotR was paced the same way? NINE MOVIES?!?:cardie:

I'm hoping by the end of all this to have found at least one installment I can fall in love with. I saw The Hobbit once and can't remember a thing about it :(

Not that I didn't admire all of it, I did. I am happy to live in an age that can recreate fantasy so well.

My guess is that The Desolation of Smaug will complete the Smaug arc and end with the Pyrrhic victory that is his death. The Dwarves have achieved their quest... but Laketown is burning. It would be a down note to end the movie on, but I can't think of any across-the-board good up moments between Smaug's lair and the Battle of Five Armies. If that's where the movie ends, we would probably see Bilbo start his process of breaking away from the Dwarves; he can't join their celebration, because he knows that Laketown is suffering because of them.

I saw it 5 times in the cinema. Lots of things about it annoy me as a purist, but it's nice to spend 3 hours in Middle Earth.

Not as amazing as the LOTR movies, but still a very enjoyable film.

Yeah I'd agree, not as amazing.. BUT I did wonder if the OMFG element of seeing middle earth recreated in LOTR was just over, because it had been done. If they had come out with The Hobbit first perhaps I would have been blown away.

From my understanding, the first movie was not altered significantly by the decision to make it three movies. It was during the editing of the second movie where Peter Jackson realized that the Dol Guldor scenes might have to be cut that he decided to instead make three movies. So, if there's padding, it'll be here. So I'm pretty sure the plan was to cut the first movie where they cut it for quite awhile.

It had a hobbit in it.

Nine movies... to counter the Nine Riders of Mordor.

I think this task was appointed for you, Hollywood.

Well, we'll see: The Lord of the Rings will be adapted again, probably in our lifetime.

I'm a hardcore Tolkien obsessive and my favourite adaptation of his work is the heavy metal concept album Nightfall in Middle Earth by the band Blind Guardian. It's an based on The Silmarillion and is just amazing. That Feanor sure can rock.

I've read the books so many times that it feels like I've lived several lifetimes in Middle Earth. Visiting the filming locations would undoubtedly be a disappointment.

A number of sites ran it today as a new featurette, but it looks like it dates back to March. I hadn't seen it before, so I didn't catch the error.

Orlando Bloom wrapped shooting and made this video with Peter Jackson to mark the day:

I watched that earlier today. It was fun, and the training segment was funny. I always love the screen screen horses, people look so ridiculous on them. Then again, I guess most green screen stuff looks ridiculous before the effects are added.
