I just picked up the TOS S1, Vol. 1 DVD from my local library. However, I've noticed that most of the episodes are out of order. For example, the episodes on DVD are "The Man Trap" (S1/5), "Charlie X" (S1/7) and "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (S1/1). Is there any reason for this oddity?
That is airdate order. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series_episodes http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series
Yeah I wish they had just released them in actual numerical order myself. Also they should have had a play all button, I can't watch just one.
Just FYI, there is a thread currently in progress on viewing TOS in airdate order at http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=185882.
When the VHS eps were coming out, one set of releases was in production order. Lots of reviews were from people who'd watched first-run TOS in the 60s and many were wishing aloud that they could have had the episodes arrive in airdate order, so they could re-live the experience of watching them as they were first shown on TV in the US. The team who put out the DVD sets were also of that era, so they made sure the eps were in original airdate order. Sit with the old Ballantine "Star Trek Concordance" on your lap, spin the wheel on the cover, and read along with Bjo Trimble while watching the eps!
