DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

I still can't believe we're six months into the New 52 and we haven't seen the Justice League in the modern day continuity yet. What a weird decision. You would think they would do a modern day JL series, then do this "Justice League Year One" thing as a seperate mini-series at the same time.

It's so odd when Superman shows up in Dark Knight #5 talking about how they're teammates... yet we haven't seen them be teammates yet! We don't know what their new relationship is yet.

 

Johns stated that they wanted the first arc to tell the origin of the Justice League and come together against a force as strong as Darkseid. The second arc jumps forward to the present as mentioned before, but yeah as far as I'm concerned, editorial has made a lot of weird decisions regarding the New 52.


We also saw the Justice League appear as a fully established team in issue one of Justice League Dark IIRC.

 

With all the crises, One Year Later, and now this UnReboot to DCnU, I'm not sure if TPTB care anymore. I suspect their view of time and continuity is like rule of Italian Driving in Gumball Rally

Not to overreact at all...but a part of me...the cynical critical part who doesn't like the bulk of the New 52 so far or the decisions behind it...thinks that it isn't just continuity they don't care about now either.

 

I don't like the bulk of the New 52 either, but this is the first time in years that I haven't been able to afford all the books I want to read, so it's at least better than the era right before the reboot, so that's good, right?

 

Secret Six, Birds of Prey and Stephanie Brown are the great casualties of the New 52; actually, anything with an edge basically went, and not much replaced it. I can tolerate Red Hood and the Outlaws, but the new Birds of Prey looks awful, Suicide Squad even worse. I haven't been reading Batgirl because the idea of it just doesn't appeal. I gave up on JLI early and don't intend to go back, even for Batwing.

So while I'm more enthusiastic than some six issues into the experiment, I am aware of what we've lost in terms of sophistication, character develpment, and rich history. It feels like a zero-sum game in which I got Demon Knights, but had to give up Secret Six to do so. I'm not sure what we gained from making Bane an idiot again, or losing Scandal Savage altogether, or shaving Floyd's mustache.

 

Have you read Birds of Prey? It's really quite good. In fact, much better then the Volume 2 written by Gail Simone that was around right before the relaunch.

 

I don't doubt that ... I gave up on BoP during that second run, although I blame Simone less for it than I do DC for dicking the title around.

I've made a habit of trying titles on the basis of recommendations in this thread, so I could try the first issue. It feels a bit like I'd have the same reaction as I did to JLI: if you erase the whole history of Black Canary, she's just a kick-boxing blonde in fishnets. Oh ... wait a minute ...

 

This site for DC comic discussion just moved up a notch for me. Not sure who else here might dabble on the DC Comics message boards but we will not be doing so come this time next week.

It goes on to say they are going to be using Facebook and Twitter as means for fans to interact. Neither, imo, gives the same sense of discussion. Facebook is close but how crazy is that Fan Page going to be?

 

Interestingly enough, I've never discussed comics on comic book related message boards. I've always started various threads here or commented on various books I'm reading on my facebook page. Interesting decision though. Don't really have any thoughts on it though except like most everyone else DC is looking to start pushing their social media outlets.

 

It's well known in certain internet circles that the DC Comic Boards is filled with crazy rabid fans who hate DC products and DC Comics. They have managed in their storied career to chase off Mark Waid, Geoff Johns, Gail Simone and I think even Kurt Busiek.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Now if only they'd shut down scans daily.

 

The forums at CBR seem more interesting and active anyway.

 

True, they are mostly rabid and loyal if they like what your doing. As with most places, online or off, it's always a handful of vocal and highly active posters that makes it hard to filter through and find the thought out constructive posts.

I stopped reading BOP at the relaunch but Gail was still popping in on the BOP boards pre-nu52.

 

The DC Boards were never helped by the actions of the moderators, which seemed cryptic, inexplicable and bizarre.

 

I stopped posting there years ago. Too many wackos.

Well, really you can say the same here. I shied away from the Trek forums at Star Trek's official website and came here instead as it seemed more active and interesting, doesn't mean that we don't have our share of wackos, however.
