In the original concept for Gozer, the Marshmallow Man was only supposed to be an "intermediate" form it took based on Ray's thoughts before morphing into a scarier form. This form was never done because of budget constraints, but there are some storyboards for it. That being said, personally I think the existing film works. It's a silly moment to be sure, but I think it works.

To be fair, he does eventually make some rather creepy faces, too.

It's only because the movie is silly that it works and was a hit. It's a comedy.

I have a very strong feeling that this will end up a la Star Trek: Generations... twenty minutes to a half an hour in, the new guys will be the focus of the picture... and the only ones in any future films.

Aykroyd states as much in the many, many interviews he's mentioned the most recent project in the past few years.

This is a win-win, because it is essentially a reboot but the torch passing allows Sony to include the previous two films in whatever this ends up being... a trilogy at worst, a new series at best.

    Of course...
Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009) as the actual Ghostbusters III. ;)

As long as Aykroyd doesn't end up getting crushed by a bridge it's all good.

Personally, regardless of how much of a reboot the film is, I hope they turn both the silly and the drama elements up to 11. There is nothing better in fiction than the blending of melodrama and cheese and Ghostbusters is perfect for that style. They probably won't go as far as I want, but making the film in the style of a silly 80's comedy won't fly these days. I expect Ghostbusters 3 to be most similar in tone to The Avengers.

Anyone remember that sequel series to Ghostbusters made in the late 90s? I thought that was a good "Pass the torch" type of story that could be used for GBIII.

Yeah, it was quite good. Was quite impressed. They managed to capture the look and feel of the original movie quite accurately. My only misgivings with it was that it was too much of a retread of the first movie, and so as GBIII, I don't think it quite works, but as a game, it's great as it allows you to relive those iconic scenes. I just kind of wish they'd make a sequel to it and explore new ideas, and make it an open-world game like Arkham City. I'll say this, the banter between them was very good, very movie worthy.

Exactly the point I was making. It was a comedy, thats why it was successful and still fondly remembered. Any new Ghostbusters, whether sequel or reboot, that ignores that would be foolish. It was not a supernatural thriller with some comedic moments. It was full comedy. Which is why I love it.

Ghostbusters Extreme. And yes, it was about as good a pass the torch idea as can be done.

Did Hell just freeze over. I demand a scene where Hell actually freezes over in the movie

Now that Bill Murray's in, it's definitely happening, and with him on board, I'd say it has a much better chance of success.

Sorry folks, looks like the linked article used a satirical news site as their source.

    Look.

Good opportunity to recast them I guess.

I actually find that a disgusting thing to say.

Agreed. Best thing would just be to leave the franchise be. As for Ramis. Loved his movies. He'll be missed.
