I'm not totally caught up yet, but I just caught the second episode, and WOW. Between Cooper's partner showing his true colors during a shootout, to the shooting of the boy, to the shocking ending with Lydia's mother, it was just one powerful moment after another. It's just a shame this show isn't a bigger hit than it is. In fact I just watched that movie End of Watch that people were praising the hell out of, and as good as it was, all I could think the whole time was that Southland was already telling these same kinds of stories, only in a MUCH better and more authentic way.
This season is once again firing on all four cylinders. It's interesting how parenthood is a recurring theme this season. You have Lydia as a new mom, Sammy as a single dad trying to win custody and Cooper as a de facto father sick of training the boots. I knew Sherman was headed for a fall but I didn't expect what they ended up doing to him. It will be interesting to see the fallout from this
That was a weird thing in this episode where the Intro happened so soon into the episode (only about five minutes). Usually it's much closer to the end. I knew the old lady with Alzheimer's was going to have a dead body upstairs. I just knew it. Poor Cooper has been having a really bad few weeks when it comes to confronting old age. The guy who couldn't drive and committed suicide. The old guy who tried to commit suicide when his wife left him. And now this. Not to mention Dewey's heart attack and his reoccurring back injury. add to that his old partner hanging around asking him to the basketball games and wanting to go out for a couple of drinks like the ghost of law enforcement future.
The first half of this episode was comedy gold: 1. The look on Cooper's face when the lesbians threatened have him brought up on anti-gay bigotry charges was awesome. 2. A retirement party for a hooker? Maybe instead of a gold watch they'll give her a gold tooth! 3. Say you're sorry to chick baby for lying. It took a dark turn once we got to the retirement party, however, and Sammy started having a crisis of faith. The weird part of the situation with the tape is that from what I saw really Sammies version of events wasn't that much of a lie. Cooper's scenes with major dad were extremely well acted. This season Cooper has really been the standout of the show
I could have lived without the Cooper vs the methheads torture porn stuff this week. And having one of the characters mention "the Onion Field" doesn't mean you didn't borrow too heavily from it in the first place. Really enjoyed Golden Boy's continued descent into becoming "Baby Mackie" however.
Great episode until the last five minutes and then Spoiler: Southland season finale A cliffhanger? An effing cliffhanger?!? On a show that hasn't been renewed yet?!? Gahhh......!!!!!!
Adam-12 ended its run with Reed's wife about to leave him because of him risking his life and being awarded the Medal of Valor. They had him working undercover narcotics in the finale episodes as an in show spin off pilot. Spoiler: Southland season finale Southland probably ended its run with its main hero being an Onion Field survivor and going down harder and faster then the real life Karl Hettinger. Time to end Southland, or recast everyone like Law & Order does They wrote their major characters into a box who only Sgt Cruz of Third Watch could get out of, once.
I don't want them to cancel or recast the show because I want to see what happened. They need to wrap up the Cooper and Sherman arcs and then write out their characters however. Keep Sammy and Lydia and bring in some new blood.
This is the best show on TV. This show deserves to be renewed. I want to see what will happen with Sherman and Cooper.
Yeah those bastards at TBS that gave them so many extra seasons canceled it, how could they! Everyone was signing on to other roles, so it's not shocking.
Wrap what up? Coop didn't die but is in a state hospital or Coop did die. What's the difference and that's not two hours of Southland, that is the second half of a Law & Order Los Angeles
