What if Abrams hired him to play old Han Solo himself? Screw Ford.
What an epic day for the internet that would be.

By Star Wars VII, won't Han Solo be a famous, retired space captain?

It was a joke, folks, the man was joking. Com'on, Trek fans especially should be on to Shatner's sense of humor by now.

Star Wars Ep. VII needs a hutt who would be Han's new post-Jaba business partner, with whom he could find himself in an awkward scrape at some point. Said hutt would a) have TOS Kirk's speech mannerisms, b) have William Shatner's hair, and c) be an interstellar babe magnet.

Shatner the Hutt: Toong gata dee longae? (Still think we're finished?)
    Han Solo: More than ever.

Shatner is a lot more self-aware and self-deprecating than Takei's smug media persona would have you believe.

What has Takei to do with anything in this thread? If you've got a beef with George or his "media persona," go start your own thread in a forum which is appropriate to that topic.

If you have seen "Shatner's World" you would immediately be in on the joke. Even my non-trekkie spouse really enjoyed his stage show and unique sense of humour.

What a bad article. Shatner was obviously joking, but the article did its best to present it in a different way to create some controversy.

I'm not sure what would be worse:'

    1. The author knew Shanter was joking, but wrote the article as if he was serious just to create controversy, or

    2. The author was totally oblivious to the joke.

The second. Shatner has a reputation within the 'industry,' of being an egotistical asshole. I've also talked to people who have met him at conventions and he's also that way with fans.

So it wouldn't surprise me that someone who knows him - even only professionally as a writer - would want to screw Shatner when they had the chance.

James Doohan was rememberd for saying [paraphrase] 'I like Capt Kirk just fine ... it's Bill Shatner I'm not crazy about.'

I cannot believe the blasphemy on this thread concerning the god father, without which there would be no board to post on.

Shatner is Jim Kirk, Pine (who does a great job) stars as Jim Kirk.

Just like Nimoy is Spock, and quinto is horrible.

So if the Don says Abrams is a pig well then there you have it, he's a pig. Of course he was joking and it was half quoted but even if he wasn't you better recognize all the glory that is Bill Shatner. I can't believe that people would say such bad things about the greatest thespian of the past 3 generations.

Just out of curiosity: does "J.J." stand for "Jar Jar"?

    I must offer a counterpoint.

Shatner *was* Kirk. He retired from the role in Generations.

Now Pine is Kirk, and will continue to be Kirk for many years to come.

Nimoy still is Spock, and Quinto is also Spock. I love Quinto's performance. I don't want to convince you it's awesome if you're not a fan. That's your opinion and I respect it, but I *love* Quinto and Pine's interpretations of two characters I grew up with.

Even my father who watched TOS when it originally aired loves the new movies.

I hope one day you may enjoy Abram's interpretation on our favorite franchise. LLAP!

Absolutely. Shatner is such a ham. I love him. Hopefully my wife and I will get to meet him at Boston Trek Convention this June! Not sure if we can make it yet.

Does Shatner ever say anything that isn't controversial?

I think he was, as he always seems to be doing, just poking fun. I've seen him make live appearances, he's always talking shit about someone/something. Watching him and Nimoy together you could be forgiven for wondering if they really are friends.

I wonder if Levar Burton didn't misread this statement and feel embolden to lash out at JJ himself.
