On the fly here, from recollection...this is really hard with so many incarnations and stories...top 5: 1. Robots of Death 2. Frontier in Space 3. Dalek 4. Ark in Space 5. Invasion of Time RAMA
Robots of Death-I liked this one, a respectable episode. I'd have given it average ratings myself, but it's a nice enjoyable story. Frontier in Space-Not it's biggest fan, I'm not going to like. Was okay, but not anywhere near my favourite. Still a respectable episode though. Dalek-Yes I love this one! A fantastic modern adaptation of the daleks, and shows what just one of these bad boys can do! the acting, cast, plot, everything was fantastic in that episode, a firm favourite of mine too. Might be in my top ten. Arc in Space-Never seen this one, heard it was good though. Invasion of Time-Been so long since I last saw this one, I can barley remember the details. I think I remember getting a little bored in it mind you. Still a respectable episode mind you.
Robots of Death...They created a totally convincing society in about 90 minutes. Incredible world building...really cool idea about mining ore from wind on suitable planets. They also had unique robots (androids) that were Asian styled, instead of the usual run-of-the-mill tinker toy ones. There were also some interesting elements about psychological reactions to robots: one totally dependent and accepting of them, another afraid of them in human form if they seemed too much alike (the uncanny valley). I thought it was claustropohobic and clever, a model for episodes similar to it that came after. Frontier in Space: An example of Dr Who doing what it had no business doing with it's budget: Intergalactic brinksmanship and war. We had a developed alien race in improved makeup and burgeoning Earth based empire growing out into space. There were some timely messages about the cold war here and the Doctor was all over the place: space, Earth, the moon...amazing. I wish the new series did more episodes like this. Ark in Space: A message of enduring mankind, overcoming obstacles. Some nice production design for a change and a straight science fiction story that never strays into fantasy or silliness as the new show often does. Dalek: Somewhat ruined by subsequent Dalek episodes. Sad. Invasion of Time: I recall this one being a longer serial than usual (we saw the ENTIRE episode at one time here in the US). There's something menacing about Gallifrey being attacked, and while the Vardens were inconsequential, the Sontarans never are!
R.O.D: Well it's definitely better then some of the shit Moffat craps out nowadays. F.I.S: Well it's the tenth anniversary series. They wanted to do something good. A.I.S: I should see it. Dalek: I liked the Parting of Ways/Bad Wolf. The Stolen Earth/Journeys End was quite good. Not as good though. Didn't like the whole cult of skaro thing the daleks had going on. I found it silly. The Moffat dalek episodes have been appalling. But yeah n hindsight, the Eccleston dalek episodes are the only very good ones. I.O.T: Yeah, I never like the longer serials much. I like ones with four or under episodes. Otherwise it begins to drag on. Yeah it does seem menacing, but a puny race like the sontarans realistically could not have pulled it off.
I've heard a lot of Negative Fan reaction for Invasion of Time. I'm not sure why, I always liked it, but, I typically like all the Stories that show/involve Gallifrey Plus, it's the Story that puts Leela and K9 on Gallifrey to pair up with Romana II in The Gallifrey Adventures Audio Dramas, which I think are Fantastic.
Well, the Hinchcliffe/Holmes era is undoubtedly the best, but the one thing I'm not a great fan of is how they turned gallifrey from what to me appeared more like a species that seemed about the power of the mind into one that seemed more like a stagnant society reliant on the matrix. Then Graham Williams kinda turned the knife by making them seem super incompetant as well, which is one of the main problems with Invasion of Time for me. Anyway, my faves are: 1) Remembrance of the Daleks 2) War Games 3) Turn Left/Stolen Earth/Journey's End(a dire last ten mins don't drag down the other 80) 4) Curse of Fenric 5) Genesis Of The Daleks
New Show: "The Doctor's Wife" "The Girl in the Fireplace" "Boom Town" "Dalek" "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" Old Show: "City of Death" "Ark in Space" "Carnival of Monsters" "The Mind Robber" "Genesis of the Daleks"
1- "Vincent and the Doctor" 2- "Father's Day" 3- "Caves of Androzani 4- "Greatest Show in the Galaxy" 5- "Remembrance of the Daleks"
Didn't we just do that one? The Aztecs Tomb of the Cybermen Genesis of the Daleks Blink A Christmas Carol
The Doctors Wife Blink School Reunion Robots of Death City of Death And I'll add a special mention for the SJA story "The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith". Not technically Who, but Elisabeth Sladen and David Tennant acted their socks off in that.
I rewatched "Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?" yesterday and it blew my mind. Graeme Harper and very oddly Gareth Roberts are like David Lynch in that.
its really hard for me to pick just five...but here goes.... The Talons of Weng Chiang Inferno The Pyramids of Mars The Doctors Wife Tomb of the Cybermen
