Smith Hoping Time Heals All Wounds

    • Kevin Smith wants to get the band back together. At a scant 110 pages, he’s halfway through the Hit Somebody script and is hoping to rejoin the studio system. Which means he wants to spend studio money.

Well. That didn't take long. Wasn't it only a month ago he was spitting in their collective faces?

I'm convinced the guy's on drugs at this point. And not just weed. His behavior is way too erratic. Either that or he's got some unresolved mental health issues.

Not surprised. People have also stated their concern about his behavior over recent months. I've not really detected much difference to be honest. Through his pod cast and media site he's getting more exposure I guess? "Hit Somebody" is also supposedly his final film as writer/director so he probably wants distribution through a studio.

I'm a huge Smith fan and some of his movies are my favorites but personally i think he's still stuck in his amateur days mentally.

Sure.. he can now spend millions on a movie as opposed to the few thousands he made Clerks with but nonetheless he may have realized his golden days with the Jersey movies are over and the general public has spoken and was not kind to him.

I think he's stuck creatively.. he can do dick and fart jokes like no other but as soon as he ventures out of that comfort zone he drops sharply in quality (see Zack and Miri make a Porno right until the point they realize their feelings and the movie turns from good comedy to love movie.. it was horrible).

I don't know about current college students but back in the 90s he was their king and he rode that wave hard and made movies for them.. he made good profits but failed toi branch out for fear of failing (see his comments about the Green Hornet movie and how he was too scared to take up such a big budget movie).

So recently he took some risks, they didn't pay off and he reacted like a sullen child who's been told he wasn't good. Apparently he's now realized that the movie business has dried up with him waging war against the studio and critic system and is returning to the fold with a mea culpa on hís lips because what else can he do?

I don't know his financial status but i doubt he can retire at this point bit who knows? He loves movies and figured he'd rather put up with studios than don't make movies at all.

I think he's pretty well off. He has a nice house in LA and has made money over his career even if his films have done mediocre at the box office, or as Kevin would put it himself "30 million bucks give or take". I think "Cop Out" burnt him out. That's my theory.

Lucas had a LOT more to "lose".

I love most of Kevin's movies, the view askew stuff mainly, but comparing him to Lucas in any way is a little askew.

    I don't know about that.

Both made a splash in indy films, both are fond of referencing the stuff they loved as kids (Lucas=old movie serials; Smith=old Lucas films) and both turned to shit after getting a taste of early fame.

I just figure Lucas had tons more success, even if you only consider the original trilogy.

Kevin certainly never hit that level.

Doesn't he own that comic book store in Jersey? Plenty of people can survive on that.

He bought a theatre and rents it out specifically for podcasts, so yeah, he's fine. He's said before that he'd be happy to just do podcasts and Q&As forever now.

And despite how he "screwed" over studios, for 15 mil it'd seem stupid not to invest in it.

I dunno, I'd say that, if nothing else, Chasing Amy has far more depth and emotional honesty than anything Lucas has ever done.

I wouldn't deny that. I was speaking more of the financial success I mentioned in a later post.

Chasing Amy was a really good movie. It was no Dogma, but still really good.

American Graffiti is probably the closest thing Lucas has ever done that even approaches depth and emotional honesty in my humble opinion.

Kevin actually owns two comic stores now. The flagship store in Jersey and another one in LA that he opened up a few years ago I believe.

Smith has "unretired" again: The indie auteur revealed plans for a new movie, to be called Helena Handbag, which will show humans teaming up with Satan to battle a "rapturing giant Jesus." Smith expanded on his 2014 to-do list via Facebook, pushing aside his recent retirement talk to say he'll only do projects that are unique to his brand of filmmaking.

Geez, this dude quits filmmaking about as often as Alec Baldwin quits Twitter. ;)

Sounds like a sequel to Dogma.
